Oh wow Ben. So sorry to hear this. It looks pretty bad in that pic. I guess it could have been worse, but that is hard news. Hope you heal up soon!

Thank you, it could be worse

Get well asap Ben xxxxxxxxxxxx

What will your recovery involve?

benwill profile image
benwillMarathon in reply toroseabi

I have just had an operation to put some pins in the hip ball joint. And then a physio will assess me to see what I need

Oh no! That's bad luck. Bike crashes hurt (a lot). I have intimate experience myself (track racing in my youth). Hope it's not too bad and you can bounce back this season. Hairline fracture or more involved/surgical? Get well soon mate.

Yea it hurts just had an operation to sort it so now a long road of recovery.

Yep that's a good way of putting it, although not sure I used that word while being dragged out the middle of the road 😉

Just when I had finally managed to say hello to you at Parkrun, you go and break a bone. I thought this time of year that happened when skiing not cycling. Guess you'll be doing just the Eat Bacon part of BBB for a while now.

I have been known to cycle down Chart Hill. I will take extra special care there now, or maybe choose a different route.

They get you up and about quickly these days, no convalescence home for 6 weeks. Can you change your Paris entry to a wheelchair one? Then find someone to push.

Get well soon!

benwill profile image
benwillMarathon in reply toLangley-Loper

Yep eating bacon does sound the best way, not allowed to walk on that foot for 6 weeks so who knows how long before I can run. Hopefully I will get down to volunteer.

I have been down chart Sutton Hill plenty of times with out incedent just one of those things. 🙁Makes me think twice about getting back on

Yep shorts where cut off, stopped them cutting off my cycling top!

Hope you're not too sore now - that will be a dent to your plans but your underlying fitness will stand you in good stead. Good luck - enjoy the drugs I'd say.

benwill profile image

The drugs are great! 6 weeks of doing nothing 😂

Welcome to the club (that no one wants to be in). I broke mine last October actually doing a marathon - got to 24.5 miles. I’ve got the dynamic hip screw too! It will be a slow recovery but you will be active in the next few days when physio starts 😀. Being fit certainly helps with recovery so we do have an advantage there. Good Luck with it all.

misswobble profile image
misswobbleMarathon in reply toAnnieW55

Aw Annie I hope you're doing ok shug. What a bloody crock of poo these injuries are. You seem to be bearing up, stoic that you are. It makes you want to kick the virtual cat dunnit Hang in there x

AnnieW55 profile image
AnnieW55 in reply tomisswobble

I’m doing fine thanks.

Saw a surgeon this week who, after an x-Ray, tells me everything is healing well But I can only do low/medium impact stuff yet. See him in another 3 months. Keeping my feet in training by wearing my runners at every opportunity 😂.

benwill profile image
benwillMarathon in reply toAnnieW55

Sorry to hear that and so close to the finish. But it's good to hear your doing well ish now. I have read it will be a very slow recovery 🙁 I guess no more races for me this year

AnnieW55 profile image
AnnieW55 in reply tobenwill

Thanks Ben. The patience muscle certainly gets tested!

At least we’re saving on entry money 😀.

I hope your pain relief works as well as mine did - I was flying for quite a while.

benwill profile image
benwillMarathon in reply toAnnieW55

I hope I can do it, I guess I don't have much of a choice.

What kind of exercises can you do now?

AnnieW55 profile image
AnnieW55 in reply tobenwill

You will be fine. As you say “have no choice”

The exercise started pretty much straight away and is building all the time bit like C25K 👍. I’m walking a lot (built up from 10mins 3-4 times a day to a couple of hours at the weekend now plus my daily stuff which is a fair bit), general strengthening exercises - squats (oh yes!) lunges, core, weights, stationary bike, aquarobics (sp?) swimming, tai chi anything but running 🙁 or high/highish impact as it’s all still mending.

If your bike is ok you could use it with a trainer, (typically had just got rid of mine). OH got me an exercise bike a few weeks in which I still use when watching TV (takes the sting out of the hill programme). Physio looked horrified when I suggested taking my mountain bike for an actual spin ☺️.

I know everyone is different (and not being negative, just what happened to me) but don’t pin your hopes on the “6 weeks and everything back to normal” . Not knowing any better did and it knocked me a bit to find that that wasn’t the case. I don’t consider myself old but was 63 when it happened so not sure if that is affecting healing time. I couldn’t drive for nearly 10 weeks as I couldn’t do an emergency stop. So work towards 6 weeks but if it takes longer then it takes longer. I have everything crossed for you that you are Super Healer.

benwill profile image
benwillMarathon in reply toAnnieW55

Thank you that's great information, yes I figured that if I can't load bear it for 6 weeks I won't be running for a bit longer. I will just have to take there advice and take one step at a time. Very appreciate the long reply.

Anniemurph profile image

I didn't know that, Annie - been out of touch too long! Really sorry to hear it. Are you all recovered now? Or well on the way, at least?

AnnieW55 profile image
AnnieW55 in reply toAnniemurph

Thanks Annie. I’m on the mend but it’s going to be a long haul yet. Surgeon says no running until Ive seen him in 3 months. I posted about my exciting(.!*) day last October and a second one with a photo. I was having a brilliant day and all was going well when the break happened🤪

I see you are running again. Keep your mojo held in a firm grip 😀

Anniemurph profile image

I've just gone and found your original post. Oh my goodness! Your leg just went!! And your photo was so brilliant - flying feet and all!

I'm glad you are on the mend even though it will be a while yet. The thing about runners is that we all do our physio!

Thank you for your good wishes - I'll take you with me on my next run :)

My 4 year old was so happy today he was running up and down saying look daddy I can run faster then you now. 😞

MatildasPb profile image
MatildasPbHalf Marathon in reply tobenwill

It had to come eventually. I used to run a bit and my youngest son, then a young teenager, said he’d come with me one time. We were together for about 50 yards then he took off like a young cheetah. He was back home and showered by the time I got there. 😂 (TBH I was so proud of him 😉) But at least you’ve got a chance to get back in front once you’re fit again. 👍

Hope it’s going ok. I expect things are not looking too good at the moment, they will improve.

Good luck mate.

misswobble profile image

Being involved in your “return” will hopefully keep you in a positive frame of mind. Once you get going with physio - which hopefully will be very soon - it gives you a boost as you’re actively doing something to make yourself well. Good eats and drinks are key as well. You can come out if this a very fit dude 😎💪😃👍

My running pal has been knocked of his bike by a car turning right His leg is very badly broken but he’s remarkably upbeat He is a triathlete and does a fair bit of road racing on his bike, as well as skiing and running He insured himself ages ago against accident etc as he commutes on his bike. Has done for years, without incident. His insurance has taken up his claim and hopefully it will deal with any medical bills not covered by the nhs

Anniemurph profile image
AnniemurphHalf Marathon

Ouch! Wishing you a speedy recovery. At least being very fit to start with you have a head start on the recovery, and you will do your physio, so although it may seem like forever, it won't be. Still, bummer (or should that be hipper?).

Hi Benwill, I’m new to this community. Sorry to read about your accident. I have a DHS, I’m two weeks post op. I fractured it running. I’m not in pain now & happy with how things are progressing. Running is a while away yes, and I was gutted to hear that I won’t be doing my Marathon in October but I’m now in the acceptance stage. I can swim & I’ll be swimming just using a pull buoy between my legs (no kicking) and just pulling. I’ll also be using a turbo trainer. I’m just beyond gutted not running but grateful that I can keep my fitness up. (It really helps with the recover. Up your protein intake if you can that helps too. I’m on some supplements suggested by a nutritionist if you’d like me to reco them just ask) try to do the physio you’ve been given ASAP and get those muscles moving. Wishing you all the best in your recovery. Keep the spirits up as best you can. Also, I followed some triathletes on Instagram who are recovering from the same thing. Helps seeing their progress.
