I’m planning to do my first half marathon next year. Is there anyone out there who has run the Boston (Lincs) Half Marathon?
Hello!: I’m planning to do my first... - Fun Beyond 10K & ...
Hello!
Hi there!! A first-half-marathon-tastically warm welcome to the Forum!!!!! Well done for entering your first half, hope you find lots of inspiration here 😊
I have not run this race, but I have read that it's a nice flat one!
Would you like me to add it to our Events list?
Thank you for responding! Yes please to putting Boston on the Events List. My parents live on the Lincs coast and I’ve been through Boston many times. I think as it’s ‘flat’ it’s a good introduction to HM’s. Also the day of the race is a special ‘big’ birthday for me and I want to celebrate it in a different way. I hated turning 50 but this time I feel more positive!
That's wonderful! I look forward to hearing more about it 😊
Adding you to the list now - it's April 14th, right?
I was talking to someone the other day who had done it forget who it was now though 🤔. I thought it might be one for me to do as I have family in Lincs. I am doing a marathon over on the Lincs coast in November, having run my first one there last year, on my 60th birthday
I’ll be 60 on the Boston one!
Maybe this could be one for me too, I'll have hit 60 by then - eeeek!
When are you 60?
This October 🤤
How does it feel being ‘60’, legs still moving? Did you get your Cambridge place?
Got my Cambridge place this morning - exciting times! Being 60 is no big deal tbh, except I've gone up an age grading at Parkrun 😂
Excellent news! So along with free prescriptions, free eye tests & 1/3 off rail travel you also go up a grouping! Can becoming 60 be any more exciting 😉 When I did that 10K I eagerly looked up my results to find I was 5th in my age grouping. After a brief moment of elation I came back to earth when I saw that there had beenonly 5 runners! Oh well something to work on😄
Signed up yet?
No, not yet. I'm waiting to find out if I've got a place at the Cambridge Half on March 3rd. Doing a second Half just a month later isn't unreasonable, so I'm sorely tempted.
A second HM a month later, that’s for the insane, or just a running community thing 😉
Actually, I'd quite like to do the new HM in the Olympic park in February too, but even in my most foolhardy moments, I can't see myself completing 3 in 3 months.
I too have signed up for the Boston (Lincs) as my first Half Marathon. Chose this due to the "flatness" of the course as well. Seems a bit scary at this stage but left myself plenty of training time. I will be in my 60th year at the time.
Now just have to find a good HM Training Plan. Look forward to hearing about your training and progress.
If you're quick, you'll be able to download a personalised Asics plan for the HM before they remove the service on Sept 30th. Just Google MyAsics .
Perhaps we ought to have a ‘new 60’s’ team! Yes i need a plan too, i will look at the free aisics plan recommended by ancient mum. Keep me updated too on your training. Mine will start after my first 10K on 14th October. Then it’s exactly 6 months to the HM.
I think that's a great idea!! I have my first 10k 28th October so will probably start beginning Nov. I have the Asics plan now via Runkeeper. Will definitely keep in touch as the training begins. Good luck for your 10K
So we both have our first 10K’s in October and first HM next April! I’ve looked at the Boston HM website and it says ‘date to confirmed’ ?
Just had a look Maybe and date still showing as 14/04/2019. I accessed it via Full on Sport website.
Where's your 10k. Mine is Leicestershire 10K. :0
I wonder if they are waiting for the licence as a formality? Last year it was on Sunday 15th April.
My 10K is Greenham Common in Berkshire. I live just over the border in Hampshire. At the moment I feel quite laid back about 10K but I suspect a few days before I’ll be thinking ‘what have I done’😱
Hello! Just entered the Boston Half Marathon - what have I done!!!!!
Great news Maybe!! I agree very daunting thought but we've got plenty of time to train and we'll do it. I did an 8 mile yesterday, that's quite long..lol.. only another 5 on top of that...omg
Yes, 8K is a slog but it has to be done. On the plus side if we can do 8K then we can do 10K next Sunday 👍
No I must correct you...lol..lol it was 8 miles-13 K..very slow but ran it all.!
Oh good luck for your 10K next week. Mine is on 28th Oct
So sorry! I’ll be starting HM training after the 24th of this month, I can’t even imagine running 8 miles at the moment!!!
We must meet up on HM day before it starts? I’ve got to find a B&B close to the place itself as I don’t drive.
Hello, how did your 10k go? Mine was very wet, muddy and chilly but I was thrilled to have done it😁Now the HM training begins 🤭
Hi Maybe, Yes went ok, finding the cold weather running aggravating breathing difficulties and had have a few walks so no PB 1:16:18. A bit disappointed but overall really good event.
Yes I think I am going to go with the Hal Higdon HM training plan. What about you,? I'm interested to know your HM plan and start together, virtual training buddies might be cool, keep each other motivated ?
That would be great! My (draft) plan is 4 runs a week with the 4th being the longest. So Monday & Wednesday nights are running club with 5miles minimum usually done. Thursday is the introduction of the extra run which will be built up to 4miles. Saturday will be the longer run. I will be firming up 'the plan' later this evening. I'm just about to go out for a 5mile run after a very lazy week. I did a cross country event of 5.9miles last Sunday with the running club. I don't do well with anything when the clocks change so it's only now (late Friday afternoon) that I feel 'normal'😄 I will look again at your plan and get back to you 👍
Hope your 5 mile run went well and you feel back in the land of the living
I too will be running with my club, Tuesday night 4 miles, Thursday's are used for either intervals or hill work so I will probably forgo that in place of 4/5 mile run then Sunday the long run. If I go with Hal Higdon plan then will also have run on Wednesdays.
Catch up soon
Yes, run was good and I swam with my sister this morning. Re training: I'm going to follow Runners World's advice to be running 15-20miles consistently for at least 4 weeks with the longest run being minimum of 6 miles. Then start HM training. So with club twice a week that's approx 10 miles. Add the 6 miles long run equals 16 miles. Build up another run of 4 miles, gives me 20 miles per week. So I'm going for 3 stages - 1) November build up to 20 miles per week. 2) December run 20 miles per week for 4 weeks. 3) week of 31st December start 12 week Runners World HM plan. I'll use club running within the plan so I'll still get intervals, hills etc. I'll do occasional park runs, and 10k's to work on speed. I aim to do a 10 mile race in February. I just need to write out the stages on A3 paper with coloured pens and stick on wall. Then I'll tick off the stages when completed. So Stage 1 starts Monday, the journey begins...
Or approximately 90 runs 😳
Wow..I have been reading the Runner's World info as well and will set my 4 week pre-marathon training goal at 16 miles per week as I can't fit in a 4th run with work and rest days.
I was hoping to start this week however quad muscle strain/tear still posing some concern so will be off the roads for further treatment for another week (wishful thinking) and review again. I feel really disappointed but need to show patience as lack of it probably a factor in the injury.
I am so looking forward to getting started...HM here we come!!
