Hello world. My moon running has picked up a bit this week (a bit late, but such is life) as I did a pre-taper test run of just over 18k on my dodge leg yesterday. I didn't want to go too far afield as all long runs involve hills round here, the weather was horrible and I was worried I might end up overly sore and far from home, so I just ran round and round my local park like a crazed hamster π It seemed very strange thinking about fuelling for something so close to home.
Anyway, the positive thing to come out of it is that my leg felt alright, I could feel it niggling as I ran at first but it subsided after a while. It's fairly cross today but that's fine, I only need to hobble in to work and will roll in some Deep Heat later. Other exciting findings: I got a blister in the usual place at about 14km on the arch of my right foot so it's not the shoes after all π€. Best strap my foot up again for long runs. Calf sleeves look a bit silly but possibly helped with fatigue as I've not done a longer run in a while. Overall I was pleased with my base pace too, I wasn't pushing it at about 6min/km and although it was as flat as a pancake I reckon I should get within my target time for the next big event. π€ Tried out some Clif blocks and quite enjoyed them, though they had no green flavour available. π
That's the annoying part, they do a margherita flavour which sounds brill but I can only seem to buy them in bulk! How much do I need a green clif blok. Hmm. 24 packets worth? π€ Maybe...
Love your relive and note the muscular balance.πCW & ACWπ
Your coming up with solutions.
No real hills on GNR.π€Just a few gradual inclines but not hills, ignoring the drop down at the end. Watch that and the 90 deg left turn at the bottom onto the coast road.
Hope your quirkπ€ free for it , you will do superbly well on that HM course I feel and hope you enjoy it.
Rained off and waiting to get a start. Could not resist a quick visit.ππ
Take care of you and ATB with your fixes.π₯πββοΈπ₯
Hehe oh yes! Quirks not niggles! πThat's good to know about the course, I had googled the elevation but one person's hill is another's flat so it's hard to know who to believe! I can take on a gradual incline I reckon.
Tbae, your brief hiatus has been very brief indeed π Hope the rain lets you get back to your garden before you get immersed again! π€£
Did a long run of 31 km last week and then took 3 days off to rest the legs. I'm tapering for my Sept 9th marathon in Tallin from now onwards. Splashed out on another pair of more serious trainers yesterday (Asics Gel Nimbus) as my Asics Gel Pulse 8 shoes are nearly dead at 950 km and I don't want to bugger anything up during my marathon! Went out for a quick 5k to test how "fast" they are. They're great, but I suppose all new shoes always feel super and "faster"
I am going to have a similar problem with my Saucony ISO Zealot 3 (just above 600 miles on them) but I haven't bought new shoes yet. At this point I'll probably run the 10 K race on the 2nd on them and I need to think about the HM on the 23rd of September, but I love those shoes!!! The problem would be adding another 100/120 miles before the race could be risky...
Congratulation on the run and preparation for your marathon and enjoy your taper!
Iβve been continuing with my HM plan and have now run 21.1km twice, so I know what the distance feels like for the day. Iβve also been visiting different parkruns in Wales and Yorkshire over the last few weeks which was a nice change. Been trying gels and flapjacks on my long runs - undecided which is best so might just use both π
I'm still a bit scared of gels, loads of people use them successfully but I've heard enough stories ofβahemβ'digestive issues' that I think I am at a point I might simply imagine myself into trouble. There's a sis refuelling point at the GNR though, I might see if I can pocket a few for testing at a later stage π
Yes, I saw there is also an SIS gel station on the GER so I bought a few to try from the supermarket to try beforehand. It was fine for me, but a bit warm from being in my pocket so will look for alternative storage.. π
This week is taper week, after 6 weeks above 40 miles per week with one or two speed sessions. For the first time I am tapering for a 10 K race. I wasn't sure what to do, decided to cut in half the interval training (did 3X1000 mt. at 3'40,3'40 and 3'35'' with 2 minutes recovery jog) and run about 25-30 miles in total.
I have no idea how to pace the 10K so this week it will be me thinking (probably over thinking) about that. Aim should be a sub 43' (with a dream goal at 40' if everything is perfect). Enjoy your week!
I'm super excited (I clearly don't get out much) because I'm off to the physio about my hip later on, which has occasionally been a smidge bit grumpy when I do prolonged exercise, be it horse riding or running or roller skatingβit's pretty indiscriminate, and also inconsistent. I am 99% certain it's to do with having a sedentary job and being a bit flappy and hypermobile in the joints but thought I might as well get an assessment and some targeted strength exercises from a professional. I phoned yesterday and they said 'you can come in now if you like!' π As much as I appreciate the NHS its poor overstretched funding and staffing levels would not allow that kind of response. Anyway, I put them off till today, and conscientiously booked a lunchtime appointment (I realise my mistake now, as I'm both hungry and procrastinating at work). Crossed fingers they don't tell me my skeleton is falling to bits and I must never do anything active again. π€
Well, the physio did not go as expected, after an hour of me prancing about in my shorts and bending whilst she scrutinised me in rather uncomfortable detail she says I've excellent glutes and core control and that she is flummoxed by the occasional pain I get in my hip. She could force my hips to hyperextend but says my muscles have compensated for that movement and she has no concerns about excessive motion. She didn't even give me any exercises to do, simply said to keep doing what I was doing as it was clearly effective. I have been referred to a podiatrist to check the minute mechanics of my feet as aside from my overpronation everything is pretty good. Which surprises me a bit as my job is so very desky, I find myself having to unfurl at the end of the day, so I always assume the worst for my poor old musculoskeletal system! I'm doing it a disservice. Also, excellent glutes! That might be the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me π
It's a puzzle. I've had physios etc. tell me there's nothing much wrong with me, I suppose we just have to live with pain, ho hum... Trouble is it can occur at the most inopportune moments!
we run and running is sooo good for our bodies, that pain becomes part of our life (that's nice )
I know you didn't ask, but I am going to try and give you some of my experience with pain in my legs... (please do not use it if you think it's rubbish, which could be...)
i have a desky job as well (hours in front of a computer - or on a plane...) Have you tried to stand up and stretch every couple of hours? it worked abit for me.
Also I try to have 2 different shoes at any time (possibly with 2 drops, one at 8mm and one at 4mm). The cushion is more effective if you alternate shoes, and the change in drop helps using different muscles (same is achieved by varying speed and road inclination).
hope you find the solution to your running pain (and PLEASE share if you find the solution
I do try to take a coffee/tea break as often as possible, which involves a small walk to the kettle to reset the eyes and bones, but some days we are just so under pressure it just ends up being ten hours of staring at a screen (or several) very intently! Luckily I'm on quite a relaxed production just now so I'm able to wander about at will. I sometimes think about using a standing desk as they are hydraulic and can be raised to suit, but I fear too much standing might be bad for you too.
It's frustrating isn't itβon the one hand I'm delighted to hear the physio has ruled out a long list of possible issues...but my hip still aches sometimes, so....yeah. Not that helpful! I am not that interested in what's *not* wrong with me.
My surfaces and speeds are quite varied, but more shoes? Yes! I hardly need any encouragement there π I do have some semi-retired Brooks for short distances, I'll investigate the drop on those guys and maybe consider some others too. Thank you, a good call I think. Worth a try! And if I do find a miracle cure for any annoying runner's aches I'll let you know...
So true π These past three months I've bought two pairs of road running shoes (home/work) and a pair of trail shoes, not to mention two pairs of nice new ankle boots, so what's another pair!
Trying to join the wed run group on a more regular basis. Yesterday was long intervals at 600m x 4 with 200m rest breaks. Was quite fun and not too painful. Calves just a little tight today. Also finally checked my weight and have dropped 10lbs since I began using my Garmin last year which was a nice bonus.
