Keep On Running

Came across this article this morning...

nytimes.com/2018/08/01/well...

Bit of a wake up call for me, as I haven’t run for over a week now 😳. Been playing a lot of golf and I find 4 hours in this heat really draining. Plus sleeping badly due to the heat, which means not getting out early to do a run before it gets too hot. See how I’m making excuses here? πŸ˜‰

Anyhoo, the article suggests that taking a break of a few weeks can have serious health consequences (especially for old gits like me), and it can take a long time to recover afterwards.

So the message is definitely, as The Spencer Davis Group once said... Keep On Running! πŸ˜€

Oof! Plus you risk losing the habit of exercise, which makes it even worse!!

Eye-opener!!! 😲

Hopefully a week off from running will not have a huge impact....πŸ™„

I suspect not - I'm sure both you (after your hols) and me (after my laziness) will be back on it straight away :)

Get out there. Make hay while the sun shines πŸ’ͺπŸ‘πŸ˜ƒβ˜€οΈ

So it’s hot! πŸ€·β€β™€οΈRun slow πŸ˜πŸ‘

Good article, if a bit scary! Good to be aware though. Sounds like you've been keeping up the mileage to me, just at a slower pace. Golfing is good for you. And with the cooler weather on its way, you'll need another excuse. πŸ™‚

Yeah, one of the guys I played golf with yesterday (who also runs marathons) was recording the round on Strava (as a walk). Might start to do that, if only to make me feel less guilty πŸ˜‰

Yes, do it! I record my walks to and from work, but just keep them as a private activity. It would bore folks rigid to be faced with my plodding up and down the hill every day, but it's a good record of activity I've done. It all counts. 😊

Deeply scary for an elderly couch potato like me 😳

You, a couch potato? I think not! πŸ˜ƒ

in reply to Sandyscroll

I am though 😊 on non running days I sit around reading all day. Sometimes I only clock up about 2000 steps

I don't think runners can entirely qualify as couch potatoes though. I'll bet the people in the experiment were driven mad by having to limit their steps. I can manage a meagre 2000 on a Sunday, but if I were told I couldn't do more than 2000, I'd immediately want to go for a run or walk. Wouldn't you?

On a run day (which is 3-5 days a week now) I really want to be running. But on non run days I honestly would be happy to doss around. If I didn't have to walk the dogs, I'd be welded to the sofa (except for trips to the fridge ;) )

3-5 days a week?! 😱 I do 3 max. You earned those sofa surfing days...and you walk the dogs! I think you're safe. 😊

I don't think it's conclusive, very small numbers of people were involved, please don't let it worry you!!

I'm a couch potato too, I can do very little for hours on end 😊

Thank God I went running tonight or I'd be dead by now.

What an interesting study, albeit, a few comments about sample size.

Keep on Running Alright.πŸŒŸπŸ‘πŸ‘

As a minimum keep on moving, always.

Somehow with years, pointless stopping, don’t function right, too much inertia to restart, and as others have said on here, would rather drop down dead running than die on the couch.πŸ’₯πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ’₯

Thanks for posting this, really useful.πŸ€”

Did not analyse it, just accepted the concept.πŸ€”

Not sure where we would be without R&D generally.πŸ€”

Obviously not a view held by all.πŸ€”πŸ˜‚

Thanks Ian.πŸ‘

The research shows going from being active to stopping completely. Even when I have a bit of a break from running I don't stop all activity. It shows that it is important not to switch off completely, but I think occaisional breaks from a particular activity are benficial.
