Bit of a wake up call for me, as I havenβt run for over a week now π³. Been playing a lot of golf and I find 4 hours in this heat really draining. Plus sleeping badly due to the heat, which means not getting out early to do a run before it gets too hot. See how Iβm making excuses here? π
Anyhoo, the article suggests that taking a break of a few weeks can have serious health consequences (especially for old gits like me), and it can take a long time to recover afterwards.
So the message is definitely, as The Spencer Davis Group once said... Keep On Running! π

Good article, if a bit scary! Good to be aware though. Sounds like you've been keeping up the mileage to me, just at a slower pace. Golfing is good for you. And with the cooler weather on its way, you'll need another excuse. π
Yeah, one of the guys I played golf with yesterday (who also runs marathons) was recording the round on Strava (as a walk). Might start to do that, if only to make me feel less guilty π
Yes, do it! I record my walks to and from work, but just keep them as a private activity. It would bore folks rigid to be faced with my plodding up and down the hill every day, but it's a good record of activity I've done. It all counts. π
Deeply scary for an elderly couch potato like me π³
I don't think runners can entirely qualify as couch potatoes though. I'll bet the people in the experiment were driven mad by having to limit their steps. I can manage a meagre 2000 on a Sunday, but if I were told I couldn't do more than 2000, I'd immediately want to go for a run or walk. Wouldn't you?
On a run day (which is 3-5 days a week now) I really want to be running. But on non run days I honestly would be happy to doss around. If I didn't have to walk the dogs, I'd be welded to the sofa (except for trips to the fridge )
What an interesting study, albeit, a few comments about sample size.
Keep on Running Alright.πππ
As a minimum keep on moving, always.
Somehow with years, pointless stopping, donβt function right, too much inertia to restart, and as others have said on here, would rather drop down dead running than die on the couch.π₯πββοΈπββοΈπ₯
Thanks for posting this, really useful.π€
Did not analyse it, just accepted the concept.π€
Not sure where we would be without R&D generally.π€
The research shows going from being active to stopping completely. Even when I have a bit of a break from running I don't stop all activity. It shows that it is important not to switch off completely, but I think occaisional breaks from a particular activity are benficial.
