Since my hm on 22 April I have been out running up to 9 miles max but mostly shorter runs. I have covered 105km in May, same distance as April so it looks as though all is well. However, I don't feel like I am progressing or covering distance like I was. Runs feel like hardwork, possibly as it is hotter and high pollen counts or maybe my mojo has dipped. I run solo a lot as sadly my requests for company on social club runs don't happen because I am faster, go further etc yet I don't see that I am fast or fit and happy to go slower. So I am ticking along, maybe I need a goal? A run buddy would be nice but never mind.
Yesterday I ran home from work, well that would take me 5 minutes so I took a 5k detour!! I took my vango hydration back pack to try but it did slip a bit on my shoulders so I need a smaller lady specific backpack. I was knackered during the run, post work, recovering from a head cold, in the heat and sweating buckets! Now I need a new hydration backpack before a planned club 10 mile run! Slightly worried if I still have the fitness for it.
Today was the NHS70 parkrun so I was challenged to run in scrubs (no clogs, that would be a disaster!). It was rather hard work and I now really appreciate wicking material over cotton!!
Sorry I have been a little absent but I am still running about. I think I need a pick-me-up pep talk or a kick up the backside!
Sorry to hear you’ve been struggling a bit since your HM but great to see a post from you. With all the training you did and the structure you were following, it seems reasonable to me that you would struggle without a set goal in mind. I find I feel more on track now that I have a plan i’m following for my fall race instead of just flailing around. I’m a really structured person (strong A type personality here) that doesn’t tend to “go with the flow” easily. I signed up for a 10k trail race in the fall and found a 10k training plan that still has some longer runs, maxing out at a 16k run so it is a nice balance between shorter speed workouts and longer “easy” runs which I was enjoying in the winter. It might be worthwhile to consider changing things up a bit right now with all the long distance training you were doing to try and keep it fresh. Just a newbie’s opinion, with really no experience😄
I am looking at a plan again for a 10 mile run in October. I wonder if I should put in for a half marathon distance on the plan so I do a few 10 miles before the event. I too am quite a type A personality and maybe this is what is showing now I have no plan!!
Haha scrubs are very comfy at work, like pjs, but not for running!! It was a unique experience and unlikely to be repeated!
I am looking at a plan, it is the way forward for me I think. In 2 weeks I have a 10 mile slow club run and it worries me that I have lost my fitness and stamina for the distance, club runners seem to have high expectations of me. And I need to sort my hydration back pack before then, argh.
Well, you're certainly still getting the mileage in so well done. I always slump after working towards any organised event and the mileage can drop dramatically - usually have to book something else to snap me out of it.
Thanks ancientrunner. I was so concerned about post hm blues that I pushed myself out of the door which is why my mileage is up but I don't feel there is a purpose. I know it is good for me of course! I will look at a plan for great south assuming I will be booking this soon.
I can identify with the post-HM dip myself! I think I was so pumped-up for my HM it was as if my body thought it was 101% during the HM and now it's back to lounging on the sofa! I have not got out doing the sort of care-free "wind in my hair" miles I imagined I'd be doing by now. Crappy. I' ve given myself a few weeks off but am determined to get back down to business asap. A "mate" of mine suggested we run the Tallin Marathon in Sept and that has sort of refocussed my attention. The runner's lot is not a happy one in terms of lounging on those hard wow laurels is it? Bugger!
I was so determined to get through my hm too despite the heatwave! I had a week off and got back to it although met much resistance from my body! I hoped I would keep sailing through those long slow runs post hm but I struggled. So now maybe an event is needed, one for me rather than charity based. I am on it!
Funnily enough, l had no post HM dip at all. I simply did what l always do, carry on repeating the whole program but with a twist. Normally l would change routes and music to keep it all fresh and this time l decided to keep the same small route and do it in laps, like a hamster. And without any music, lol. My next HM is due in next month and then I’ll do it again until I’m comfy with the effort. And then? Increase the distance, as always!
Another mad person running in scrubs, what were we thinking! Yes it was blooming hot and my trousers were sticking to my legs lol. It was for a good cause though, well done for doing a pb too!
Running in scrubs looks like hot work! Well done for that and all the miles you are getting in solo. I find the long runs harder on my own now for some reason, so I am thankful for the Saturday group. You are still doing great. Maybe setting up a plan towards a race will give you a new goal and something to look forward to?
Hi Decker, interesting you find solo miles harder too. It's great you have a group that you can run those miles with. If I suggest anything over 10k I get a very awkward silence 🤔. I need to cement the plan, book it, arrange logistics and train for it. It will be me on my own again but that's obviously the way it has to be. Thank you.
What some people in our group do is run a shorter stretch while the long distance people go further. Do you think your run buddies might be up for a similar arrangement? You could keep going after they turn back. As long as it is safe to do so.
I have run to the meeting point and then run back home again afterwards so my run is longer than the usual 5k. I think I will have to accept the solo runs.
Quite often we tend to slow down a bit once a goal has been achieved. I have no idea why that hasn’t happened to me. Now I’m in the last four weeks of another HM training and l know I will go again and do it until I’m ready to increase the mileage. Simply can’t do it with other people although l have running friends. Different set ups, rules, levels, etc...not for me. On my own, in my own time.
Hi. There you are. The search parties were out for you. 😃
Glad to see you’re still running 😃👍🏃♀️💪
I’ve got a ten mile race coming up and am training for it. I’m training alone but it doesn’t bother me in the slightest. My jog group aren’t keen on longer distances either 🙂. Ten miles is hot but not too demanding hydration wise. I don’t take a drink on training runs unless it’s hot.
I have been awol from here as i have lost my way a little. I have had some knock backs in my cofidence with the run group, it has been a bit lonely. My running confidence has always been a bit fragile anyway. So time to get back to it, i think a 10 mile plan is going to be starting very soon. Hopefully, that will help my distance mojo that seems to have disappeared lately!
Just lose yourself in the running I downloaded the Audiofuel marathon training. You get a voice-over guy and he talks to you regularly, tells, you when to have a drink or stop for a breather etc ,gives tips. The music is weird but it’s right for the task, and hypnotic so you can zone out Taking care obvs 😃.
Oh I will keep running, I've just lost my way a little, dogged by a niggling ankle, heat and hayfever. I will be booking gsr this year so that will give me a focus.
I am a great believer in having running goals. I admire those who just go out 3-4 times a week simply for the joy of running, but fear I cannot emulate them. For me there needs to be a goal.
After running my first HM in March I decided I needed to spend this year doing 10k runs, so that when I start my HM training in December for the same HM next March I would have a better base (I had only ever run 5k before signing up for and begining the HM training last year). This has been great because it has opened up a whole new load of races that I have never attempted, dotted throughout the year to keep me focused. I am enjoying building my 10k stamina and speed over the season which should pay dividends over the winter when I start HM specific training again for next March. Plenty of 10k PBs to aim for between now and then and the long term goal of a sub 2hr HM in 2019.
I had hoped to keep my longer run stamina 7-10 mile runs every couple of weeks which I was doing but not for the last few weeks. I need to bring that back. I am looking at a plan starting next week for hm distance although I will be running 10 miles at gsr. That way I do some longer runs with purpose and several 10 mile runs before the event. Maybe I just need to be told what to do!!
Yep I feel like I am in a rut! I was led to believe myasics may become fee paying so have plugged in the plan specs whilst still free! I do need to sort logistics (with hubs and kids) and book gsr as I have nothing in the diary.
