Hello Wimpy,

I am sorry to hear about your wife; was she being treated for 'wet' macular degeneration (MD)?

Sadly if this is the case, sometimes someone will not respond to the treatment or the wet MD is too agressive and the treatment is ineffective.

If she has been treated for a number of months or years, her sight may now be outside of the guidelines laid dow by 'NICE' (the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) for the hospital to continue treatment.

From a medical point of view perhaps no more can be done, but there is much help and support available for someone with vision loss. Has your wife been 'registered' as visually impaired by the hospital consultant? Registration actually opens up many doors for you wife to access local support.

May I suggest that you telephone the Macular Society on 0300 30 30 111 to make further enquiries so that they can explain what is available and signpost you to further help as is appropriate.

Best wishes
