Hi everyone, during my injection Fri 17, i always remind injector,

that i don't have the drape, i talk with my hands lol, so i waved my

hands to show what i mean , the injector said she doesn't use it anyway,

she put anaesthetic drops in, then said look up, i have attended

this clinic for 9 yrs, so i was waiting for her to insert speculum,

felt what i thought was her "marking" my eye and it was quite hard and

hurt enough for me to pull my head back..then saw the usual

fluid floating that you get after the injection....i asked her has sh

done the injection...she said yes...this all happened in seconds

i left feeling "what just happened "...i have no central vision in

other eye, so it left me worrying what could have gone

wrong!...i pulled back while needle was in my eye! that's what

hurt!...in 9 yrs i have never felt pain "during" injections .....i asked myself,

what if i had blinked or turned head....i felt i had to email my concern ..

spent day with pad on eye and laid on bed ...feels much better ...

have any of you experienced this ?

Hi JJnan. I've never experienced that but that's not to say I never will, I never know who's going to inject my eye until I get there and ask and the last injection a week ago, I had a woman I have never seen before doing the injection. She slapped the drape on my eye quite roughly like it was a wet fish and placed the speculum in position and not too carefully either - I half expected to find a scratch on my eyeball afterwards - and when it came to flushing my eye afterwards, I think her eyesight was a bit off because she squirted the liquid above and below my eye and very little on my eye so it was really sore for the rest of the day. To make it worse, it was all running down the side of my neck, under the neck of my jumper and all the way down under the sleeve to my wrist!! No-one's ever been so slap-dash in almost five years and I've had a few injectors in that time.

Was your injector the same one you usually have? If so, it sounds like she was having a bad day but that's not your fault. Whatever the reason, she should certainly have advised that she was about to inject for the reasons you mentioned and I think you did the right thing by emailing your concerns about the treatment you had. It's good that you haven't had any bad after-effects from the injection in spite of what happened and I hope your email has prompted words to be spoken to the person concerned. x

I'm sorry you hahad such an awful experience..,it amazes me how they don't all read off the same page so to speak ...i'm sure thix isn't how they are trained...even if some don't use the speculum, i would expect them to warn me...thinking she was marking the eye and it really hurt i pulled my head back while she was injecting!!....worse one yet ☹

I can imagine just how much that would hurt and the negative outcome (as it could so easily have turned out) doesn't bear thinking about!! I hope your email will change things for the future for you so that you don't have to experience that again. 🤞

I am so sorry this happened to you. I have occasionally felt a pinch but that’s it. Never anything like you experienced. Sure hope you feel better. The dr who has given me my eye injections for the last year and a half doesn’t put anything in my eye to keep it open. All the years before they always did and that hurt. He holds my eye open with one hand and gives injections with other hand. He is in the room 30 seconds max! He is very advanced . Hope you feel better soon.

I have never had that treatment. I always ask for extra drops and have the speculum put in very carefully. They always tell me they are going to inject and to look at the nurses hat so I have somewhere to focus my eye. Sometimes I can feel a tiny bit of pain in my left eye which seems more sensitive than my right eye but it only lasts for a very short time and is gone as soon as I have been injected. At my last injections I mentioned to the injector that I felt it more in the left eye and she was so good giving me lots of numbing drops that I didn’t notice it in either eye.

I have to say I prefer the female nursing sisters to do it than the male doctors

I have had injections for 12 years now mostly in right eye always have drape and clip and never an issue sorry to hear of your experience. I would not want injector touching my eyelids myself so happy with all that is done they are all excellent injectors very careful and gentle.

The drape is new to me. can anyone explain what it is exactly? I am sorry you had such a scary experience JJnan. I hope it doesn't happen again. Sending you a hug xx

the "drape"..is like whan you have an operation..blue paper covers you with a gap for eyes...only it is stuck inside upper and lower lashes...x

Thanks! My people who are so good now!! (long campaign to get this), have never used drapes, but I'm happy with that. How are you getting on?

most consultants don't use the drape now 👍....i get anxious when

things like this happen as it's my good eye! (no central vision in other )...and cataract getting to stage where a decision must be made..

consultant says, 1 in a thousand chance of it going wrong, and could be blind in that eye, i don't think i have a choice, if its left as you know it will be difficult to see anyway, so have to get it done and fingers crossed .....my worse anxiety is you never know who is dojng injection!...why do some not follow the procedure ????....it's our sight their risking!!!!! ...sorry for rant .....how are you doing ?

I have both macular and glaucoma in both eyes. I started with Avastin but for the past several months have been getting Vabysmo. I have one Dr. that does injections, he has never used a drape, only an eye clip. I usually have minor irritation, liquid blob and floaters of different sizes and duration. I had none of these issues with the last left eye injection a few weeks ago. The Dr. used a smaller needle for this injection so that may be the reason. I will request the smaller needle for my right eye in two weeks to see if it works the same.

i never have the drape....but always the speculum....no communication unfortunately..x

Yes! They always use the speculum. I will probably horrify people now. I cannot dismiss from my mind that Clockwork Orange scene when you saw the speculum being put in someone's eye. However it's not as painful as it looks!
