I found this article after talking to somebody on a forum who mentioned they took proton pump inhibitors for years and they suffer from CSR. I can’t seem to find many articles about it. There was a period where I was taking at least three a week for almost 4 years. I’m trying to find more research on it I know that they affect the kidneys and the kidneys can affect the eyes. Before CSR we would go about our daily lives taking medication‘s, eating things without even thinking.. on a daily basis.. I wonder if we all could trace back to some things that maybe everybody with CSR had ingested in the past that may be a link?(like taking PPI) We say it’s idiopathic right now but maybe there is a true underlining cause! It’s a bit of a stretch but it’s worth the rabbit hole
Took PPI’s for many years & had no problems, or so I thought, with my eyes! Developed wet amd in both eyes over the years but did not connect this to the PPIs! Did end up with severe kidney problems thought. Sorry not a lot of help but would steer clear of PPIs unless Doctor insists even though there are other meds a ailable!
I don't find Dr Sam very convincing to be hones "ocular pathologies", unspecified; reported adverse effects of drugs are usually more specific.
I've searched Google Scholar and can find a few (mainly quite old, and not followed up) suggestions for a theoretical mechanism of action, but no clinical reports of a link other than a possible link to Charles Bonnet syndrome in a very small number of patients who already had MD.
Personally I wouldn't worry about it, I take prescribed PPIs occasionally for specific symptoms but I wouldn't take either PPI or H2 blockers or any other drug that changes the way the body works (both stop the formation of stomach acid) unless strongly advised to do so by a relevant medical specialist, in this case a gastroenterologist
I can agree with that! although I know that kidney function can directly affect the eyes and PPIs have given new evidence in long-term use leading to kidney issues.
