Double vision and 3D vision with wet AMD

Hello generous community,

Have any of you with wet AMD (I have left wet and right dry...so far) experienced what feels like double vision and/or sort of 3D visual effects? Perhaps more pronounced following injections for wet? Can nicking of blood vessel in eye during injection process result in worsening of leakage and edema in that eye? Just had my third injection today. Was told at last visit that first Avastin injection had produced positive changes in wet eye but results of second injection noted today seemed to have reversed somewhat, with more leakage and physician choice to secure approval for change to Lucentis injections moving forward. Of note, however, was incident of blood vessel being nicked at second visit, thus the question of whether this might have produced the referenced leakage. Any thoughts, insights about these questions would be sincerely appreciated, along with any info regarding transition to Lucentis.

Hi, I wouldn't have thought nicking a bv during inj would lead to proliferation of leaky vessels as they're in different parts of the eye. The resulting blood build up from the nick though may well temporarily affect vision depending on severity of the bleed.I went the other way lucentis 1st then eyelea. You say you're having avastin which whilst used for the eye, with success for many, was not specifically formulated for it - lucentis was and so I think that's a positive move for you.

I have idiopathic CNV an my right eye which led to scarring and fluid under the macula. This is similar to Wet AMD. I have what appears to be double vision due to fluid under my macula which has caused metamorphopsia(distorted vision) in that eye. The size of objects in my affected eye is smaller than in my unaffected eye. This causes vision in my eyes not to merge which looks like double vision. It's not true double vision where the eyes are misaligned. Try this: Focus on an object and then view it, alternating eyes. See if there is any difference in size(or distortion) between your right and left eyes. Increased fluid will raise the macula and cause distortion of various types including making objects smaller(and sometimes larger).

Thank you, Edman777. That makes total sense since I was told at my most recent appointment that there was more evidence of more leakage and, thus, more edema. It is both a rather frustrating and fascinating experience. When I look at faces I can see them but they have taken on Picasso-like distortions at times, to which I seem to somewhat accommodate until I am looking at another face. Sometimes challenging initially to concentrate on what the person is communicating because I’m distracted by their facial distortion. It’s, in contrast, quite amazing to look at some things, like the logo at the bottom of my laptop screen, and to have it look like I’m wearing 3D glasses, with the logo seeming to be in 3D! It’s rather worrisome whether this is an indication of a trend toward greater pathology and diminishing vision or just an anomaly that isn’t necessarily a symptom of decline. Can’t express how much I appreciate your feedback. Any accommodation suggestions?

I have idiopathic cnv in my left eye and have had 2 lucentis injections and the blurriness I experienced is now very mimimal now. However, just before my second injection have gave started with the slight double vision you describe.

I am finding this difficult especially with working on a computer for long hours for my job.

Have you have anything to help with the double vision or did it get any better?

Hello LJPx,The 3D visual effects I have been experiencing seem to be, perhaps, somewhat closer in time to the post-injection period but actually pretty random. The double vision is an on-going issue, particularly when looking at faces or reading written print (though not as much on the computer...odd?). In fact, trying to read actual physical books right now has been one of the losses I most miss. It’s not that I can’t read, It’s just noticeably slower and more laborious and distracting from what I’m actually attempting to read. Has it gotten worse or better? Just variable, although reflecting on it it may be that, at least with reading (possibly on the computer and phone as well) I’ve unconsciously started just avoiding any meaningful reading, possibly just scanning for what I actually need to know. That feels sad but real. We shall see what happens with the change to Lucentis, rather than Avastin, injections. Magnifying glasses can help, but feel cumbersome and seem to magnify as well the feeling of disability.

1) When receiving an injection (of any of the products) there is always the chance that a blood vessel might be "nicked", but as "eyesright" stated below that does not affect the actual retina bleed. 2) Avastin, which should be given every 4 weeks (28 days), usually needs at least 3 injections before actually producing some improvements.

3) Avastin does not work for some people & a different product must then be tried. For some people it does not work from the beginning & the Retina Specialist will recommend trying a different product after the 3rd injection with no improvement. For others it stops working after a while. In my case, Avastin worked to control the WMD retinal bleed for 14 months & then stopped working & I was switched to Eylea. The Eylea has worked for me for the past 2 years, but through trying different intervals, it was determined that I must get a shot every 7 weeks, but can go to 8 weeks if there are scheduling conflicts, as anything further than 8 weeks causes the bleed to return. Every person is different. I have read of some people being able to go 6 months or more between Eylea injections while others need it as often as every 4 weeks .

4) As for the 3D vision effects, I have no experience with that, but I suggest following your Retina Specialist's advice as he/she may want to wait until you have had at least 3 Avastin injections before making a determination to switch to a different product.

Thank you so much, Retired130, for your information regarding the Avastin and the necessity for at least three injections to be able to achieve meaningful difference in vision. I also appreciate the insights into the variable injection schedules based upon medication and individual patient differences. With my last visit to my retinal specialist I completed my third Avastin injection and will be beginning Lucentis injections at my next visit. We shall see what my new injection schedule will be and how effective the new medication will prove to be. Does Lucentis also require multiple injections to demonstrate meaningful improvement?Thanks again for your generosity of time and information.
