Merry Christmas to everyone on Macular Society! I just joined about a month ago, and have learnt quite a bit from past posts. I was just diagnosed with myopia cnv, and 2 jabs so far, and so uncertain about the prognosis and whether to slow down significantly at work or not.

I would like to hear about your experiences so far with this disease. I understand all of us will go through it differently, but would like to hear from as many people as possible - the good and the bad. Thanks so much in advance....

Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of any help. The Macular Society Advice and Information Service is open 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday on 0300 3030 111. Alternately, you can contact us via: help@macularsociety.org

Kind regards,

Thanks so much, Rosalyn. I'm based in Melbourne, Australia. I have contacted Low Vision Australia for help and they have been great! This is a good forum, I'm so glad I found this little gem. I will check out your links soon....

Hello TetrI was diagnosed with myopic MD about 13 years ago, before injections available. I lost much of the sight in one eye. Nevertheless I was able to continue working for another 7 years until I was past retirement age. Lot of computer use, teaching and reading involved in my job. I have continued driving but I do ask optician each year to confirm that is still legal.

I hope you find a Macular Society group to support you.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm sorry to hear that the injections were not available for you at that time. I was told incorrectly by the first eye surgeon that my condition could not be treated before, and I was grieving for my rapidly deteriorating sight. I am so grateful for the injections. Is your other eye ok so far?

Hope things stabilise for you.

hello, I am i the Netherlands and was diagnosed with myopic MD in right eye in August 2019. I was 65. I think when asking about peoples experiences with myopic md everything depends on the details of their situation. There will be so many differences that comparisons will be meaningless without them. The health care system and quality in each country also makes a difference. Also the stage at which diagnosis occurs makes a huge difference. I had had bad eyesight (-13 and -14) for at least 20 years before diagnosis, but had never heard of md so didnt have regular eye checks. Early discovery would have led to a much better prognosis. As it was i had a sudden large damage and scarring which caused very bad sight in the right eye. Myopic MD was diagnosed. There was a small chance that it could be something else. To find this out it was necessary to be injected with a coloured fluid and undergo a test. Unfortunately I fainted twice during the transfusion so the test could not be done. The specialist then. said that the chance that it was something else was so small that it didnt matter.

The specialist said that myopic MD responds better to the injections than old age MD.

After 3 Avastin injections sight improved in right eye.

After 7 Avastin injections it started to deteriorate, so was changed to Eylea injections.

It is now still deteriorating, though perhaps it would be worse without the Eylea injections.

"2 months ago the worst happened. It started in my left (G00d eye). But because it was noticed at a much earlier stage after 1 Eylea injection my sight was normal again. Tomorrow is the second Eylea injection. I am of course very nervous now about this as 2 bad eyes means enormous life style changes.

However, through the whole process I have been able to continue working, driving and reading.

After the last injection in my bad eye i can still drive but no longer read traffic signs. So can only drive routes I know by heart.

After I lost some sight in my bad eye reading, drawing, writing, working, and concentrating has been 10 times more difficult and makes me dizzy and nauseous. But this is manageable eventually.

Sorry such a long story but you asked about your long time work prospects and i thought without context you wouldnt get any useful info

Hi ayaeye,

Thanks so much for sharing..I feel for you, at the start of the journey it was so scary for me too, especially since my vision was so distorted in one eye and thus affecting the whole vision that I couldn't work within 2 weeks. The dizziness is bad, but now after the lucentis jabs i can now go back to work. I also do 'palming' on the eyes (cup your hands over the eyes and relax, no pressure on the eyes) which helped me with the headaches. If you are interested, I can send you the details...

I'm so pleased Tetr.

Unpleasant, but I also sup cod liver oil daily. It's an all rounder of course in terms of promoting good health. The vitamin A helps fight eye infections, which I am now prone to.

I've applied the oil topically to styes using a piece of cotton wool. I'd read about this in an old BMJ article written by a consultant from the ENT hospital in Liverpool.

Nice to chat with you again.

Hi I have journalled my journey with myopic see envy in a podcast. Here’s the link anchor.fm/marci66/episodes/.... It’s just the trailer to give you a flavour of the episodes. It’s called insensitive and you can search for it on Spotify, Anchor, Apple, Google and most podcast platforms. Enjoy.
