My mum has myopic degeneration as well as glaucoma and some other eye issues . Her sight has really deteriorated and she is now practically blind . Due to this she has fallen into a deep depression, crying all the time , not eating or getting out of bed . She was hospitalised for a week but since leaving we have found that there has been little help from the GP or mental health services.
I also have myopic degeneration so I am watching how life will be for me .
I’m angry we can put man on the moon but can’t do eye transplants.
I don’t feel a cure or medical fix will even be available for me when required in the future.
However technology moves so quickly should we be looking at the bionic eye to assist those that are loosing their sight ?
When I google this it does seem that work is being successfully in this area .
Would be good to know more about when this would be available.

Not quite a bionic eye but we're having a demo at home today on 3 types of smart glasses that help maximise the peripheral vision. They are expensive though. I'll post on how it goes.
Sorry to hear about your mum, we do offer a free telephone counselling service. It is available for people with macular conditions and their friends and family as well .
To be referred then you can either contact us on 0300 3030 111 or fill in our online form:
Please note, we cannot take a referral over the phone unless we hear their verbal consent.
It takes a counsellor a maximum of two weeks to make the initial call. Our counsellors are fully trained and the majority have sight loss themselves. Sessions consist of approximately 6 sessions of around 45-50 minutes each.
There is always a lot of research into finding new treatments/cures, including the bionic eye, however with all of that it is unfortunately a waiting game until something suitable comes along.
We do update our website (macularsociety.org/)/facebook page (facebook.com/macularsociety) when something exciting is happening so please keep an eye on those too - alternatively you can become a member and receive our members magazine Sideview which keeps you up-to-date with current research. It's free for 6 months and £18 afetrwards
No wonder your mum is depressed. It is awful for her and for you to cope with her depression and the thought of your own future. I recommend the macular counselling service which is excellent. Never heard of the special specs mentioned by eyesright but would also be very interested to get details. Hang on in there Bfree sometimes it’s darkest before the light.
