Cataracts or AMD ?

Hi everyone. I am new to this site. I have high myopia which has been stable for many years since I had retinal detachment surgery in both eyes at 30 years old. I am now 56 and for the past couple of years I have struggled seeing in low light. Opticians say my vision is good for someone so myopic and I believe it is especially in good light. Last year I started to see a yellow tinged faded spot when looking at white walls. Also at night in the very dark I see two big black blobs in my central vision. They disappear in the light. I was horrified and immediately went to my optician. I was convinced I had AMD. After a thorough test I was told I had cataracts though not at the stage where I would need surgery. I also saw a hospital eye doctor who said my macula was pink and healthy and the cause of my issue was cataracts. He did say I had some atrophy near to my optic nerve in both eyes. I’m still working and driving without any problems but whenever I see this faded spot I worry so much... anyone had anything similar?? I’m convinced I have Macular atrophy - possibly getting neurotic in my old age.

Hi Carolklb. Yes, I get the black blobs and my husband does too. We are in our early 70s so whether it's to do with age or not, I don't know but we have both noticed that it's when we get into bed at night after the light has been turned off and it lasts for about ten minutes or so and we see it each time we open our eyes. After that period, it just disappears. I have been told that I have small cataracts in both eyes (I also have wet amd in my left eye) but that nothing will be done about them not for several years.

I have always got the black blobs...I always knew if I had a bleed, as it looked like fireworks going off and as one finished another came behind, my "blob" is quite big in one eye as they stopped inj 18 mths ago, I also "see" faces etc some not nice, I have cataracts in both eyes not ready for surgery yet, ...I thought the blobs were a sign of wet AMD to....but as you have had it checked out try not to worry ...good luck for the future xxxxxx

It sounds like cateracts to me the yellow blob def sounds like cataract did you have an OCT done when getting checked out do you know? It’s like an X-ray of your eye that would show if you had AMD or anything similar.

What’s your prescription as in how myopic are you?

Hi. I had a full scan on a machine at the hospital. My pupils dilated. That’s when they found the atrophy on my retina. The doctor said my macula was healthy and the yellow was light refraction through the cataracts. My prescription is r -14 and l-13. I have been -12 in both eyes for about 25 years. It’s just dropped in the last 3-4 years possibly as a result of cataracts - according to the optician.
