Long term Macular

I was diagnosed with Macular some 30 years ago and started seeing wavy lines about 10 years ago.Ihave no other fault with my vision.Nobody is able to tell me whether my central vision will deteriorate.Any comments?

Hi moonraker21, I'm assuming you have the dry version given the slow progress. As I understand it, both versions (wet and dry) eventually will affect central vision as that is what the macular is for and what is deteriorating.

The wet md gets antivegf inj to stabilize hopefully before central vision damage but the dry version has no such treatment yet.

I believe dry can turn to wet ( I thought wavy lines to be an indication of that but I could be wrong) which ought to be checked out asap.

I agree with eyesright that you probably have the dry version of AMD since you do not mention any treatment. Wet would have to be treated. And yes, it is possible to see wavy lines even with dry AMD. The good news is that usually dry progresses very slowly and may never turn to to wet. However, the end result may well be the same in that you may loose your central vision, but there is no way of foretelling if or when this may happen as we are all different and even each eye behaves differently. The key is to check your eyes regularly on the Amsler grid and if you notice any difference in your eyesight have it checked out. Dry AMD can change to wet, sometimes very suddenly. So be aware, but please do not spend your time worrying yourself sick, as it may never happen. I wish you the very best for the future.

Dry AMD is primarily related to the ageing process and is more common in individuals over the age of 55 years. The deterioration is generally slow and over a period of months and years. However, how fast and how far the condition deteriorates is variable between individuals.
