Posterior Vitreous Detachment

I wonder has anyone here experienced this and if so please could you (please) post something here? I am 64 with Dry AMD both eyes. Yesterday out food shopping a long black-grey jagged curved line appeared across the vision of my left eye. Got to my Optician who told me to get straight to A&E. Dr there was responsive and thorough. So it's PVD and the vision 'obstruction' stays and the brain gets used to it and learns to ignore. The good news is there doesn't seem to be any retinal tear. Appointment June 25 for more checks on this. Told to not move the vitreous gel too much; walk up and downstairs gently, take care not to bend over to tie shoe laces etc but to bend at the knees... My question is: apart from taking Macular Gold what's the fastest most direct way of boosting greens, orange/yellow and citrus nutritional intake? Juices?? Blends?? My sensible diet fell back weeks ago and I can't seem to crack it and

get back on track >> Shopping list essentials ~ please, someone kick me back into line! Big thank you for reading all this.

Hi Nainis. Sorry to hear you have experienced PVD on top of everything else. I had PVD first in my left eye then 6 months later in my right eye about 8 years ago. I experienced bright lights and what looked like a shower of black specs and floaters. Each eye took a few weeks to settle down but I had to get used to the floaters. Still have a few. Then a few months ago I had the CNV in left eye which led me to this site. Yours is the first post mentioning PVD I have seen. I was recommended to give up Zumba and cycling which made me sad and not to go on rollercoasters which did not make me sad. I think as you have been checked and there is no tear you will be ok. The main fear is retinal detachment which is serious.

As for the healthy diet it takes willpower doesn't it. I buy tons of curly kale and try and have a good portion with whatever else I am having. I also have frozen spinach in the freezer and stir it into chilli or Bolognese or stew. You don't even know you are eating it. Bought a smoothie maker and try have one every other day. Just remind yourself how much good it is doing you. Not just eye health but in general.

I wish you well. 2468G

Thanks so much for replying I really appreciate it. I have a smoothie/juice making kitchen area but slipped back and just haven't been keeping to it. I think the dilemma's in getting overtired (we're getting the house ready for sale) and then sugar cravings kick in and the good regime gets buffered. Frozen spinach in the freezer is a good tip as I hadn't thought of buying frozen... I haven't long bought a bike... and I sea-row... was advised not to stand on my head in yoga and funnily enough I wasn't going to do that. I wish you well too and hope you are and stay in good health.

Hi. I took up yoga after having to give up on zumba. Fortunately haven't progressed to standing on my head.

I sympathise. Hard to make smoothies and healthy meals when you are tired and selling house. Stressful times.

Take care and good luck with house sale. 2468G

I have recurring Uvitis and non age related Macular Degeneration and I know all too well the guilt and worry of slipping off a health diet. I had no kitchen for seven weeks and ended up eating junk food, then struggled to stop.I have just had a uveitis flare up and build up of fluid behind my eye. Shear fear had got me back on the straight and narrow but it’s hard and it’s all to easy to slip back. Frozen spinach is brilliant, I microwave mine as is from frozen takes 3mins, it doesn’t taste quite the same as fresh but it’s ok and it’s every bit as good for you. Good luck stick at it and if you have a bad day just start again tomorrow you will get there.

Thank you JB for the support... Yesterday I sorted the freezer and restocked with frozen fruits, berries, peppers, SPINACH (!), butternut squash etc... getting there... Take care hope the flare up is easing.

Hi nainis,

Sounds like you have done a lot to help yourself following your PVD operation towards a successful recovery.

We have a booklet about Nutrition on the Macular Society website :

macularsociety.org/sites/de...

However, if you ring us on our helpline, or send an email, we have some recipes that may be of help to you in trying to supplement your diet with lutein and zeaxanthin etc!

Whilst we do not have an information sheet about this condition, I note that the RNIB have one in their "Understanding" Series

rnib.org.uk/eye-health/your...

With best wishes for your recovery.

Oh thank you!! Please email the recipes if you will!

I have had 2 PVDs in one eye - and I was told that you only ever have one PVD in one eye and one in my other eye last year. I wasn't told to avoid doing exercise or bending down and is it ok to do shoulder stands in yoga. I can't find any info on exercise after having had a PVD

Hi candiedate, the only warning off I've read about exercising relates to 'excessive' exercise. Gentle exercise is fine... Can I ask please whether you were advised to go easy for 4-6 weeks following a PVD (I was) ?

in reply tolarfalottie

Hi nainis, I wasn't given any warning about not doing exercise, I wasn't given any advice at all, about what I shouldn't do exercise wise. It does seem very sensible advice - to take it easy for 4/6 wks. The last PVD I had, I was also checked for a retinal tear and was told it would take about 6 months to get over it. The first PVD I had really freaked me - flashing lights that didn't stop flashing even when I closed my eyes. -

Hi candiedate, that's exactly where I'm at with flashing lights coming in from the side and when I blink. Trying not to be freaked... you don't know what's 'okay' to accept and go with or what to be alarmed about and get checked out...
