I'm new here, for my DH. He's 32 and was diagnosed dry form myopic macular degeneration today. I'm scared.

The retina doctor didn't tell us much about this situation. He just looked at his OCT scan and said it's due to his myopic and there's not much we can do, and that we need to go back to see him in 4 months. My husband got a big spot area in his right eye which totally blocks his central vision, but his left eye looks fine (and that's why he didn't realize his right eye has problems). He can still read and see, but I'm so scared that the same thing would happen to his left eye soon, since it is also badly myopic... Is there anything we can do to protect his left eye? How long do we have before the left eye also starts?

He's a chemist and he loves his job. I can't imagine what it would be like if he can't read or do experiment anymore... We are in Houston, TX, USA. Does anyone know good doctors around this area? Please recommend. We are looking for a second opinion, and still in shock and depressure...

Hi Zware,

I am so sorry to learn about your husband's myopic macular degeneration.

People who are highly myopic are sadly very prone to macular conditions.

Please see our factsheet on the subject;

macularsociety.org/sites/de...

As with the age related type, he should monitor his sight with an amsler grid on a weekly basis and if sudden changes are spotted, he should seek advice from his retinal doctor immediately.

Good diet and a supplement will be of help, see the following link to our booklet called 'Nutrition and Eye Health';

macularsociety.org/sites/de...

Also, he must protect his eyes against the harmful rays of the sun. Please see our booklet 'protecting your eyes' at the following link;

macularsociety.org/sites/de...

Do not smoke, maintain a healthy weight and keep blood pressure and cholesterol to recommended levels.

I am sure that other posters will be able to give further advice as well.

Best wishes
