macular scar and optic atropy
Hi
I am so sorry to read about your son's eye problems. I have heard of scars on the macula being surgically removed, but such operations are rarely carried out due to the poor success rate and the massive risk of making things worse.
As to the optic atrophy - your medical team should first find out what has caused it, although this may prove difficult as there could be numerous "alleged" causes and none have been definitely proven. I wish I could offer you more advice. I know of no treatment, I am not a doctor. Just try to make sure he eats a healthy, varied diet if possible in view of his general condition. I have worked with Down's Syndrome children for many years and understand the many problems they may be faced with. I feel for you. Bless you!
I wish you both well
Hi maximussharma,
So sorry to learn about your son.
I am afraid that that to our knowledge, there is no treatment for a macular scar at this moment in time.
Sadly, there is no effective treatment for optic atrophy either.
If you live in the UK and would like to have a chat with the Macular Society helpline, please call 0300 30 30 111 (9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday; however the helpline isn't available until Tuesday 2nd January).
Best wishes
