Hi 2 of my children daughter aged 16 son aged 7 have just had a routine eye exam at boots opticians .My daughter went first and when the eye test was over the optician showed me a picture of her eye with a scar ,she said she wasn't worried but was going to request a scan at the hospital.Short while later my son was finished with the eye test and his optician came over shocked that he had the same sort of scar as his sister both in their right eye ,my son's scar was slightly bigger but apart from that they were very similar ,he is also being referred for a scan at the hospital ,has anyone experienced this ? Thank you for reading Soozi

Hi Sooziboo. It must have come as a shock to you. I am so sorry.

It sounds very much like a genetic condition to me of which there are several. I assume your children wear glasses, hence the routine eye check-up. Scarring of the retina or macula can occour at any age, even in newborn babies. Your opthalmologist will be able to answer all your questions. Make sure you write them down before you go, as we always tend to forget what we have meant to ask. Monitoring at regular intervals is important. Your children's eye condition may, or may not, be progressive.

Best wishes

Hi ,this was just a routine eye test ,my daughter had never needed glasses before but has been given them for reading and close work (interestingly the scar didn't show up on last year's routine test) ,my son's vision is perfect apparently and this was his first eye test

May I ask if routine eye checks are the norm of today or did you request them? My children were born end of the 50's and beginning of the 60's and never ever had an eye test in those days.

Your daughter is very young to need reading glasses, which suggest there is something going on. However, it is by no means uncommon. I would be very interested to know what the scans reveal, if I may be so bold.

Anyway, good luck to you and your children.

The children in Scotland (not sure where your from) are required to have eye tests every year ,I have 7children (3 boys 4 girls)and 3 of my girls have glasses for classroom use ,reading,TV, computer etc my other daughter has a blur in her eye but prefers to do without glasses .I have glasses myself I've needed them since I was 8 I'm now 39 .I have been advised to get the rest of the children checked again so they can photograph the back of their eyes to compare with my 2 with the scar ,I will feel more at ease when they have their scans done ,thank you for taking an interest
