Urgent referral : Hi my daughter went to... - Macular Society
Urgent referral
I'm a nurse....my educated GUESS is that your daughter has some swelling or inflammation of the optic nerve. An urgent appointment is required because there are some possibly serious conditions that can have this as a symptom - and would benefit from early diagnosis and treatment. The eye examiner is taking the correct step in referring her to a specialist so anything serious can be ruled out.
Best wishes for a diagnosis and successful treatment, if required.
Linda
I have some experience of the system, and would suggest that you go to A&E at Moorfields, WITH the appointment letter, but with additional symptoms of mild headache and some intermittent blurring/ spots or whatever.
They WILL examine you and then decide if your exisiting appointment is adequate or you need to start treatment right away.
Don't omit the additional symptoms!
I would NOT condone adding made up symptoms!! She has no symptoms but they will still examine her, she has an appointment in 4 days and should keep that.
Sorry - didn't do the arithmetic. Even 4 days could be 4 days lost. I was very lucky with WMD. I noticed a problem and the optometrist said Moorfields NOW - on a Saturday evening. as to the exaggerated symptoms, that's a longer story......
Your optician can refer her to the eye clinic direct. I would return to the optician and ask for urgent help from there. Your GP is not an eye specialist and might have not realised the urgency
Not sure what the symptoms are. All I can say is that she is in safe hands. Our daughter at 50 plus after a routine check at the opticians was referred to the local eye clinic, who referred her to Sheffield (The Moorfields of the North) who diagnosed Eye Melanoma from there to Clatterbridge for treatment, all in a matter of weeks. So far almost 2 years later she's fine. That's the worst case. I'm not a medic so like you I don't know what your daughters diagnosis means but based on our experience she will be well looked after.
Thank you all for replying..my daughter has no symptoms at all.. the optician reassured me that..he said that this indistinct margins have been present since 2014 and is jist a routine check to see if is normal..he also stated on gp letter that..NO PRESENT COMOLAINS INDICATING PAPILLODEMA so he thinks is not that..but because he wrote urgent referall within 2 weeks to neuro ophtalmologist...all this is making me worried sick.. he sayd nothing serious but how cannot you not worry if the referall is srated as urgent...
Can you update us? What was the results of the appointment for your daughter? Wishing the best for you.
