AREDS 2 formula is the one to look for. Talk to the Macular Society's helpline tomorrow. O300 3030111. Hannah Bartlett from Aston University is currently researching on supplements/diet. She is a speaker at the September conference. Viteyes is one product that contains the AREDS 2 formulation but there are probably others.

Aston University researchers have produced a leaflet for those taking part in their research project which is a guide as to whether to take supplements or not. I talked to them on Wednesday at the Macular Society Roadshow in Birmingham.

Hope this helps for a start. The issue is controversial. Some opticians sell a product that makes them a profit. You can buy most eye health supplements on line or at health stores or chemists as well.

Many thanks Gill for your answer I will phone Macular Society tomorrow and get their input about the best supplements. I read up on line about Areds 2 . I have been told by the optician to see my doctor first before deciding which supplements to try, she said she thought that they were all more or less the same. Thanks for your reply Molly

Glad to hear that your optician advised talking to your doctor first. There are some medications that make taking eye health supplements unwise. However, this area is very specialised and if your GP is up to date with macular conditions and treatment you are very fortunate.

The area of supplements is a very complex one.

Firstly, it is very important that you talk with your GP before taking any supplements or making any dietary changes. They will be able to advise whether there is anything likely to conflict with any existing medication or medical conditions.

The medical profession are very divided in their opinion as to the potential benefits of supplements. However, there are trials which indicate their potential benefits e.g. the AREDS trials. We do not recommend supplements, however, Macushield Gold is one of several supplements which follows the AREDS2 formula, as does the aforementioned Viteyes 2.
