Do you really need three references if you have only had one job in 30 years? Also in my minds eye, could a professional reference be from someone who knows you in a professional level, ie a work colleague, any professional you know who is willing to provide a reference as to your character? What is the intention for asking for the references? Who is a professional in their eyes? How open do you think you could be with the employer?

Good luck

Actually I need 6!!!!!!!!!! 3 Professional and 3 personal also a CRB check. I wonder if it's worth it for £7ph and 45p a mile for petrol, but then it will pay the mortgage or part of it! It has to be someone senior to me not equal with me. Therefore a colleague would not apply. Anyway I have written to Royal Mail and my GP and hopefully they will oblige. Thanks for your input.

It very much depends on how well you know your GP. Having worked with several I know that many will not provide job references for any patients as policy, but then others are prepared to give a personal rather than professional reference (this is because you are not known to them in your professional capacity, but as a patient). They may well be willing to provide this for you if they feel they have known you well enough and for some length of time. All you can do is ask I am afraid. Three professionals does seem quite a lot to provide but like Topher am assuming that because of your long-term employment that these would be related to your current work colleagues/ managers rather than an external "professional" depending on what your current employment is ?? Good luck.

As above for Topher. Yes I have asked for the delivery office manager and a line manager for a reference. the trouble with Royal Mail it's all swings and roundabouts, partly because now it is run by graduates who don't have a clue about the workings of the.......no I'm not going down there. I got a job there because my parents worked there. My GP well.....I have seen him every week for 3 months in 2011 and then all of last year monthly and I am seeing him next week. Oh gawd too late now I have posted the letter. I have a good GP. A friend of mine calls him "the housewives choice", to which I laughed. You have to pre book if you want him. Oh well I can only hope. Thanks
