Hi,sorry this is not an answer but a question, what is tmj? I get alot of pain in my jaw and my teeth will suddenly become slack then tighten up again for no apparent reason,i also get sharp pains in my ears and my hearing comes and goes a bit,is this what you mean?

hi efur, tmj stands for temporal mandibular joint disfunction, and can be caused by many things ,it is seen a lot in patients with connective tissue illness s , its avery complex illness with many horrible symptoms ,but it basically involves the muscles and jaw bone not working in synergy together which causes pain in the face , jaw ear eye etc . i have also got arthritis in my jaw which is caused by my lupus and gives me terrible pain. hopes my answer has helped.

Thanks for explaining.I do not find it easy to mention things to my reumy or gp and have not said much about my jaw, face and ear pain even though it often causes me difficulty with eating and sleeping. Now that i can see others also suffer from it i will find it easier to mention.Glad u asked this thanks. Hope u manage to get some relief with this sounds bad for u.Sympathy, hug

Blimey I get all of this as well! I don't have any answers either. I thought it was just me or maybe the methgotrexate. I get what can only be described as cramps In my ears!

I wonder what TMJ is as well.

Yes I have lots of problems with my ears and teeth and have suffered with painful tmj since 1986 !!! I have had all types of mouth guards to try and help the pain in my jaw !!! I was told over 20 years ago that I was suffering from ( tempromadibula joint diss function syndrome ) excuse the spelling I not good at it !!!!!! X

hi olibop, thanks for your reply, tmj is a truely horrible condition to have and at times it totally overtakes my lupus symptoms ,at the moment i am having private tretament with a neuro muscular dentist and it has helped although the cost is shocking, has your rhumy specialist said your lupus and tmj are linked? i have had differing opinions one saying yes and one no ,the maxillo face specialist said they are linked , he sees it a lot ,but they cannot offer the same treatment that i am paying private for ,a lot of tmj suffers just have to put up with the terrible pain and suffering .

Hi there!

Yes I have had this in the past. My dentist said it is caused by grinding teeth together in your sleep and that stress makes it worse. The only thing suggested my dentist and GP was a mouth shield but to be honest it was so uncomfortable I gave up very quickly.

I do find that when my stress levels are high I get the jaw ache again - another ache/pain I learn to live with.

Sorry I'm not much help. You have my full sympathy, it's a hard one to cope with. I wish you well In finding some relief. :-)

Hi My Auntie has problems with her ears and she has Relapsing Polychondritus which is a member of the autoimmune diseases.... she has very similar symptoms to me as a Lupus sufferer. This may help but it is very rare... x
