Hi Jon,

I've found an answer to this question in an old LUPUS UK publication. It was published back in 2000 so I cannot say if there is a better answer now but I thought you might like to read this anyway,

"We still do not know why there is such a strong female preponderance, though a lot of research work is focusing on the effect of various sex hormones on the immune responses. It is also a mystery because men who develop lupus do not have any particular hormone abnormalities."

I am convinced that my Dad has has Lupus altough he has never been tested. I was diagnosed in 1986 after a long period of illness, I am now stable, but my Dad has all the problems I have and is on the same drug regime as me!!!!
