Hi I was nervous about taking azathioprine too but am ok on them. Like most drugs the write up can be worse that the outcome. Mine was titrated slowly to 100mcg. I had a huge problem with methotrexate and stopped after a couple of doses. Not all drugs are the same for everyone so try and see. It may do wonders. Assuming you had a blood test to check the chemical in your blood?

Good luck and I hope it makes you feel better

Hi ,Thank you for taking time to reply,

Yes, I did blood tests before taking them.

How long are you on it?

Hey. I have been taking it now for about 12 months. As the dose got higher i went through some sweaty phases but that could have been the lupus playing up. Otherwse no problems at all. I hadalso developed cutaneous lupus with large patches on my skin and it has cleared those up so i am much happier all round takingit. I am the same with all the meds they try but eventually give in to taking it. I have only had problems with methotrexate.

Good luck and i am sure you will be fine.

I've been on Aza for a couple of year and never had any side effects. It turns out that I don't have lupus but another autoimmune disease and it's been very effective. I know some people can't tolerate it but I've been fine fortunately. Some advise to take it at night and then you will sleep through any nausea you may experience initially.

I’ve been on azathioprene plus hydroxy for over 10 years and after the initial few months yuk I’ve been fine and I really do react to soooo many drugs. To be honest it’s been a life changing one. Doesn’t make life perfect but better enough to be worth it. The weekly then four week bloods to start and when dose change were a bit Ooph but ok. After six months on aza my hair started growing properly again. We are all individual but it worked for me. Good luck with it

Hi, I had been on AZA for a couple years before switching to hydroxy recently. My major side effect was insomnia but it was great for my skin. As mentioned, we all respond differently to medications, I was happy to have the periodic blood tests to offer me reassuarance.

Goodluck with it, keep notes of any changes. Hope it goes okay.

Hi,

Unfortunately I didn’t tolerate Azathioprine very well but after being on it 4 weeks, with it being increased slowly to 75mg, my fortnightly liver function blood test suddenly showed a problem.

It’s taken a couple of weeks to recover and now waiting to hear about an alternative drug they want to put me on.

Some people are ok on it but unfortunately not me.
