I have just been diagnosed with Lupus and have Hashimoto too. Starting on Hydroxychloroquine. Should I make dietary changes?

Thanks so much for sharing

Hi lovely welcome 🙏

I’ve been gluten free for 10 years and avoid anything red (else look like I’ve had 👄 filler😉) . The decision to go GF was after bowel resections and my paranoia of becoming constipated 🤨.

I also avoid garlic as it makes me rash up on face . I don’t think there are any specific dietary requirements it’s really what suits your body best . Most important is to notice what makes you feel good /rough then maybe avoid .

Hugs 🤗 xxx

Welcome Liy!! Nice to have you.

Keep a diary. I agree with Tiggy. Hashimotos is associated with celiacs. I tried to go GF and made things 100x worse because I discovered I was reacting horribly to rice, which I was using to substitute for gluten. 😳

Everyone is different and we find certain things set us off but it’s not the same for all. Onions, nightshades and fatty meats seem to set a lot of people off. Chocolate seems to set off people’s migraines. I do fine with gluten. Thank the lord because I love wine and a good bitter brew. Garlic is also a trigger for some but this would be impossible for me to eliminate completely.

Lastly, invest is good sunblock and UPF clothing as we all are pretty sun sensitive. Sending hugs. ❤️xx

Thanks so much for the responses. I eat gluten free and low histamine and avoid corn, soy and histamine liberating food and medication.

Garlic can make me bedridden for at least 48 hours. I really miss it!

A very warm welcome to the forum Liyaelize. I know nothing about Hashimoto but I have SLE and have found pork in any form to be my enemy and make me quite ill. I find only Zentiva brand of Hydroxychloroquine agrees with me, the others cause gastric problems. Looking forward to seeing on the forum again. Take care. Hugs 🤗😘 Spottyx

Hi, Welcome to Lupus forum!I am sure you will find your own way trying different food but I have gone vegan (initially gluten and dairy free) lately in an effort to bring down inflammation level (apparently all animal meat source creates this) and am beginning to feel better. I have found all sorts of new way of eating beans and etc which is exciting fun. My naturopath has told me not to take Hydroxy with magnesium supplement at the same time. I have been on Hydroxy for 7 years and only discovered a year ago that different brands have filler differences. I have switched to Zentiva as Spotty-ewe mentions here and feel so much better! Less stomach issue. Doctors don't tell you this. Zentiva is not easy for the pharmacist to source so you must insist (nicely!). I also take magnesium supplement for better sleep and my nerve system so I have found my naturopath's advice very helpful. I found my naturopath by a recommendation from this forum. So ask away whenever you have questions and also please share your experience and etc in the future. We are all in it together! Take care.

Over time you may want to make changes but if you do it all at once and start new medication at the same time, you will have no idea what you are reacting to -if you have any adverse reactions. I have been taking hydroxychloroquine for 14 years with no major problems so long as it is with food. I was on it twice a day, now only once so take with breakfast. Annual eye checks needed -can do with a reputable optician. My local hosp eye dept can't cope with having lupus patients as well as all the rest!!

I've been on this for over 15 years never had any problems I agree with Flotence91 dont make any changes just yet let your body get used to the new meds first you may not need to change anything. Please get your eyes tested as hydroxy can cause problems. Good luck xxx
