Azathioprine replacing steroids cause nausea?

Hi all! I hope you’re well.

So ive been trying to get off steroids for about three years now and the lowest ive ever gotten is 6mg. Time has come around again and I am on 6mg/7mg alternating (taking it reaaal slow). It is only my second day doing this and i am experiencing some nausea. I know azathioprine can cause it, and i did experience some when I first started on them but it faded. I know that now my body is starting to make its own steroids and will likely be relying on the azathioprine more than ever before (i have been put up from 100mg and 125mg this round of weaning as well).

Essentially I am wondering if it is normal to start experiencing nausea again and if that could be due to the azathioprine replacing the steroids?

Also, any tips on relieving nausea is welcome to! I know about herbal teas but if anyone has any alternative I would appreciate it ☺️

Hi there. I am sorry to hear you are experiencing bad nausea. In my opinion there is nothing worse as it puts you Oven your food and then makes you feel more poorly. I am due to start azathriopine soon and reduce my steriods. So not much help there.

Tips for nausea: ginger biscuits, mints (polos), fresh mint on veg and a sprig of mint in cooled boiled water as a drink.

Please keep me posted ad I shall be joining you in this venture in a couple of weeks. I wish you all the best.

Keep on going on!😘

HiExperiencing same reaction with increasing taking Mycophenolate to help me deal with flare etc...been discouraging as I been taking it for years, so was surprised to be having this reaction...

Right now before I chase after GP again to make suggestions, I been experimenting with taking with & without food & the timing of when to take the meds... Also, I cut it down (the meds) slightly, to see if I could build up a tolerance.

The night time dosage is okish, but still getting waves of nausea during the day after my am dose...

If I am desperate I have some anti sickness meds from a previous treatment, but prefer not to take it as it makes me even more tired... So thinking like you an alternative which maybe my next question to my gp of an option...

I can feel the benefit of the increase dosage, which makes me want to push on seeing if I can tolerate it...

So sympathies & glad your being offered to steroids & hopefully both of us can push through this 😀👍.... ml

Hi Maggielee, thanks for posting your experience! So sorry you are also having a hard time! Have you also noticed an increase in tiredness since the nausea too? I hope you find something that works for you 😊 yes we shall push through!

I think the increase med made me tired too, so taking largee dose at night helped.... Mind you our bodies are adapting to meds & battling with us & pushing through to try & do physical work/exercise is a real challenge...

Note if you feel any other changes...I certainly can finish a sentence now, so less foggy which is a delight for me & it encourages me to realise my diseases were out of control...

Feel better....ml
