Hi my SLE friends

Plz suggest me the most effective way of protecting myself from sun. Actually I belong to India, which, if you are aware has very hot and bright summers. So, pls share your tried and tested methods.

Thank you

Hi Putloo, I reccomend a big floppy hat, a good parasol with UV protection and factor 50+ sunscreen. I also use factor 50 sleeves for my arms, I order them from America.

I’ve used a big floppy hat with SPF 70 and sat under large umbrella and after 2 hours, still got sick. Drained, felt a bit nauseated. And any body part accidentally out of the shade turned very red and stayed that way for months. 🤷🏻‍♀️This happened to me twice last summer. (Southern California). Idk if they make an SPF stronger than 70?

Hi Putloo, as well as using hats and umbrellas, I have washed some of my clothing in a powder called Rit Sun Guard, which makes them uv protective - it only works on natural fibers, like cotton, not synthetic fabrics, like polyester. I think the wash may need to be in hot water. You can also buy sun protective clothing, but it is expensive. I take my walks in the very early morning or in the evening, so I can enjoy some outside time without worry, and I avoid being outside between 10 am and 4 pm, or thereabouts, though I am not always strict about that. I always use sunscreen with an ingredient called Mexoryl, which is very uv protective. If you visit a place that is sunnier (nearer the equator or higher altitude) be more careful -- I had a very bad sun reaction during a winter vacation when I went from a cold gray climate to a warm sunny one, and apparently that is not uncommon.

There. That is everything I know. Good luck. I am sorry you have to deal with this -- it can feel awkward and limiting, but once you get a routine in place, it is not so bad. And we are all here to support each other, which is wonderful. Take good care of yourself.

Hi Putloo, I have extremely sun-sensitive skin and live in sunny, hot Texas, U.S. All of the recommendations here are great - time of day matters! I’ve found that layering types of sunscreen helps a lot. For example, I wear Coola sun block spray (the only organic one I can find - expensive but worth it, available on Amazon) spf 30 on my arms, neck, chest. I let it dry before putting on clothes, Then if going outside, I also wear a long sleeve, and use an spf 50 umbrella (also from Amazon). On my face, I wear moisturizer, then LaMov organic BB cream, with spf, then powder, then spf 30 Coola setting spray. I’ll also wear a hat. The layers of protection have worked well, even visiting Texas beaches. When in the sun for longer periods, I wear Aveeno positively mineral spf 50 and reapply every hour and a half. If you research spf, you’ll find that research says a higher spf is not necessarily better or offering extra protection. Make sure your sunscreen has both uva and uvb broad sprectrum.
