Hi gals, after lupus how has been your hair? I have suffered tremendous hair loss. Some how it's getting better but the speed of recovery is very slow. Anyone who could suggest something good for help?

I’ve never had good hair. I’m 56 as of a few days ago so hormones/age has a play in the game as well.

I don’t wash my hair daily; usually twice a week with an all natural shampoo. For the last 8 years I’ve used castor oil for skin/hair in my shampoo. My hair is better than its ever been. It’s just a drop but there are shampoos with castor already in them. I find too many other things in those as well. If I don’t need to I don’t style. I try to not pull it up but if I do it’s very gentle.

I used to use dry shampoos sometimes but my skin doesn’t like it now.

I can’t take fish oil but when I tried my hair did better. I do take biotin.

If you’re not in my age group maybe something will help.

Hi Putloo, hair is definitely a problem. Get some Biotin supplements. It’s good for hair, skin and nails.

Along with the Biotin, I use a shampoo called ‘Ovation Hair’. You should be able to find it on line (I hope). I was amazed at how much softer my hair was after one use and then after three months I saw soooo many tufts of new hair. It was amazing. Best of luck.🙏

Hi,

I found being on Mycophenolate Mofetil really helped me. Before my hair was falling out in handfuls. The floor was covered in hair and so was my hairbrush and pillow.

I used to wash my hair everyday and would have to empty the plug hole at least twice. Now I can’t manage to wash my hair so much and use dry shampoo in between washes. I don’t use heat on my hair that often either.

My hair loss has vastly improved thankfully.

Mine is like that at the moment. Mycophenolate is the next option for me but it would mean changing all my RA meds. Pleased it’s helping you x

It's some what similar with me. There is regain of new hair.. But the overall health of hair needs more...BTW try using castor oil combined with equal ratio of olive/coconut oil twice or thrice a week. It's helping. Thank you for your response

B12 and vitamin D deficiency causes hair loss. You need to take the relevant cofactors to enable the supplements to work properly. FB groups Vit D and cofactors. New Beginnings vitamin B12.

Mine is a nightmare too at the moment. I have discoid lupus and RA. I keep it shorter, jaw length bob and have regular trims. I’ve also just started using Nioxin shampoo & conditoner. Not sure if it’s helping with regrowth yet but it does sooth my scalp. I’m also trying to minimise heat appliances on it as much as possible x

Putloo, a quick suggestion on hair. Both my daughter and myself had very little hair after lupus. Infact lost almost all hair although we had thick hair before. Our process involved two things, eat healthy and drink kefir (by healing our guts). You can eat lots of salad, fish and fruit. Not sure if you are vegetarian. We also drank a cup of chicken broth every other day, chicken boiled with onions(3-4 onions and some salt). I made sure my daughter slept 12-13 hours each night, sometimes with rest breaks dividing the day into three. We used amla oil, and sometimes castor oil and coconut oil mixture every three four days on our hair. Most importantly, we gave our body time to heal. It is easy to fall back on lupus activity if you skip sleep or get stressed. I prevented any form of activity or sadness from us. It is a journey, and what matters is you, just focus on yourself. Sleep/rest/eat well and use natural oils to nourish your hair and body. If you follow these steps, you will get more healthy than other people. Yes we have lupus but we can live as active as one can be. Be patient and give yourself the healing time. Mine took about 8 years, my daughter took about 6. But here we are, with full time jobs and friends whom we can have coffee with. Our journey is a bit complicated than others, but we can get better. lots of love, Lx

This is the best motivational answer that I have received in the group.... Wow, u made my day... Better to say u made my coming year... Thank u... Happy to share... I m trying to stick to somewhat similar lifestyle... If everything goes well... Shall be picking up my full-time job soon. Am on strict diet... Low fat, low sugar, low salt...chicken soups, egg whites, limited dairy products,..... Mostly organic products ... 8-9 hrs of sleep {I hv a 5 yrs son} 😊... Started using castor oil with coconut oil for my skin and hair which has really helped me for the skin irritations. It has been a very long year for me and my family. Hope that the coming year brings better times for all of us....

I wish the same for you and your family... Infact for all the members of our big lupus family.... May we all be blessed with lots of good health and happiness in this new year....

Thank you

Thank you for your kind words. And please please please remember one thing, lupus is tricky. It will give you little extra time. If you do not rest and follow your body signs at the right time, the consequences would be serious. Just rest and eat well. Find activities that your child can do whilst in bed, or resting. For instance drawing, building blocks, etc until you find the next strength. Cook simple food, and find quick solution to cooking for family. I cook rice and meat (fish is easy to cook) and also purchased a slow cooker for stews. I put veggies and whatever and leave it for 7 hours and its ready. I dont stand long hours at work, found a job which requires me to sit down and do. And most importantly, I have the best reason to get up, every morning and this is, the desire to live the next day. Life is a journey, has been a bumpy one, and we go through as much as we can. Yes I suffer with depression, pain, sometimes it feels very dark, but I get up, have a shower, put clean clothes and tell myself, tomorrow is a new day, just get there. And it has always been a better day than the previous day. Wishing you a good journey in your life. With love, Lx
