The length of time that someone is on methotrexate can vary a lot. Doctors try not to prescribe it for any longer than they need to. The aim is always to try and use it to get your lupus under control, reduce the amount of steroids you may need, and then when things are calm for a while to try and safely wean you off it without triggering a flare. A lot of people I have spoken to have taken methotrexate for a number of years, but it isn't usually continued as long as hydroxychloroquine.
