Infection in abdominal
Hi LilRosie1,
I've never been diagnosed with a stomach infection, but I do have gastric reflux disorder and have to always watch what I eat, mostly plain bland foods and nothing fried. If I eat one French fry, I can still taste it 3 days later. Sometimes I regurgitate what I eat or drink. Proton pump inhibitors or PPIs work good for the gastric and abdomen pains. Steroids can make my stomach very sick, but a strong generic probiotic recommended by the pharmacist helps tons. I do get random stabbing pains in the upper right chest where the stomach is.
How does a Dr figure out if you have a stomach infection??? I'm curious because whenever I get put on a strong antibiotic for some other infection, my stomach starts to feel great and almost normal. I've had Irritable Bowel Syndrome since high school.
If your feeling heat on the skin above your abdomen area, you should probably be seen by a doctor pretty soon. That may be a sign of infection.
How are you doing now???
Best Wishes
Hello Amy....this reply is just to say: I've tried my best to answer some of your questions in my reply to lilrose's post (below). I hope something in my reply is useful to you.

Hello lilrose
I hope you're seeing your gp about these miserable symptoms. Have you asked your GP to test whether the causes of your gastritis include bowel bacteria overgrowth?
There can be many causes underlying chronic gastritis. For instance, long term treatment with NSAIDs and pain meds. But bowel bacteria overgrowth also causes gastritis...and patients respond well to antibiotics for this, in combination with other appropriate treatments
I have been managing chronic gastritis due to having been prescribed daily NSAIDs for decades...from way before my infant onset lupus diagnosis was recovered and I was prescribed lupus meds. My version of chronic gastritis is also due to gastro intestinal tract slow transit dysmotility (which sometimes leads to medics diagnosing IBSC (constipation type irritable bowel Syndrome)). In lupus patients, it is common to have several causes underlying something like chronic gastritis. This makes gastritis treatment complicated and often means doing several things at the same time in order to reduce signs & symptoms. My medics & I now think my gastro slow transit dysmotility is mainly due to my Ehlers Danlos hypermobility + my early onset sjogrens
I am 63 now, and finally have my gastritis greatly damped down thanks to a combined treatment plan. What helps me most are:
- daily lupus meds prescribed by my rheumatology lupus clinic (I make sure I take them with food, and I get types that are less likely to upset my gastritis, eg Zentiva hydroxy & gastro coated pred & myco Cellcept)
- daily antibiotics prescribed by immunology (I have a Primary Immunodeficiency alongside my version of SLE)
- a conscientious anti inflammation diet (a Low FODMAP approach has helped me most) featuring fresh ginger tea which I sip all the time
- following all the usual lifestyle management techniques for gastritis, gastroparesis (slow emptying of stomach), oesophagitis etc: eating little & often, avoiding tight clothing, etc etc
Like Amy, over the years I noticed my gastritis damped down when I was in antibiotics. Now I know this is an indication of bowel bacteria overgrowth due to gastrointestinal slow transit dysmotility, both my immunologist & my gastrornterologist are delighted that immunology's daily antibiotics are reducing my gastritis symptoms so well....but I do still have to continue my self help techniques! I'm sorry to say that I react badly to PPIs...in my 40s-50s, I spent many years taking pantoprazole and then, when that stopped helping, oesomeprazole daily prescribed by gastrornterology for my chronic upper GI conditions ...during those many years I had a permanent sort of diarrhoea (it's been suggested I should try other types of PPI, but my medics and I are trying to avoid this while my gastritis is responding so well to daily antibiotics & lifestyle management)
Hope something in there is helpful to you...sorry for replying at such length, but, for obvious reasons, this subject is close to my ❤️
