This has nothing at all to do with lupus, but I went Drs this morning as I have a few moles which have been bleeding... Now I have been referred for emergency appoitment to the cancer clinic!! What the hell... Last thing I wanted to hear at the age of 21 is that I'm being tested for cancer....
Feeling for you leanne....right now, i'm going through an emergency cancer clinic experience (gynaecological, not dermalogical, though). My results aren't all in, but so far my impression is that I'm looking what the medics call "safe".
All oncology doctors are focused on catching cancers early & fast...and on documenting an 'at risk' patient's characteristics via baseline results of current tests, scans & examinations. So, this emergency referral route is really important whether you actually do have a cancer or don't.
Many of us are more at risk than other people - for all sorts of reasons (our immune dysfunction (yes, our lupus & secondaries!), our immunosuppression meds...previous cancers, environmental exposures and genetic predispositions etc etc can all increase our level of risk). Our medics are right to be vigilant & to refer us quickly for specialist checkups. Yes, the whole experience makes for high stress & anxiety levels....I'm feeling vvvvv weary of my emergency cancer investigations experience...but I'm also feeling vvvvv lucky to have such speedy & expert attention zeroed in on me this way...and to have the support + encouragement of our wonderful forum
I'm so glad you showed your dr these bleeding moles & that you've got this urgent referral...and I'm so glad you're here letting us know about this... I hope you'll keep as posted as you work your way through the investigative pathway....
In the last year I have been through cancer scares too,not nice. Most recent one overs my skin too. I know this isn't easy but try not to panic,a bleeding mole is a red flag symptom so will get an urgent referral but many other things can cause this too. Like barnclown has said we are much more at risk because of lupus and the medications and I have found these urgent referrals helpful in getting results etc quicker.
Hope all goes well, I have had a type of skin cancer removed a few years ago and it has reoccurred so had it removed last week
