......she's tried ice cream, fortisips, yogurts, soups!!!

Many thanks

Dear Saddolly

Sorry to hear about your Mum having pain on swallowing. This can be a side effect and usually lasts 10-14 days. There are liquid medicines to help, including pain killers. Perhaps contact the GP or the lung cancer specialist nurse, to have the pain reassessed until your Mum has some relief. Taking painkillers half hour before meals may help.

There is some good information on managing the symptoms on the following link from cancer research UK:

cancerresearchuk.org/about-...

Another option would be to speak to a dietician, either your GP, lung cancer specialsit nurse should be able to provide conact details, there is usually one allocated especially for cancer care.

As you probably know to avoid hot drinks, spiced foods and alcohol. Soup is fine if not too hot.

It may be worthwhile considering water with lemon and honey (tepid to have the soothing effect) or make into ice cubes/ honey ice cubes.

If you wish to discuss anything you can call us on our free nurse led helpline number on 0800 358 7200.

Kind regards

Hi, I had this as a side effect from radiotherapy. Basically your oesophagus is burnt and you are trying to eat on that. It hurts! Yes the numbing med (can't remember what it's called) helps, oramorph from your dr is good too. Don't get constipated -Laxido or similar helps. Loads of ice cubes to keep hydrated. Anything slimey- porridge with loads of cream, soups with cream I know she has no appetite but you must try to get the calories in somehow!

I'm so sorry this has happened to you. It is truly miserable but it will pass. Loads of sympathy.

Good luck!

Lorna
