I've just had 5 sessions of radiotherapy on my shoulder as the cancer has spread colony the nerves. I was warned it might impact on my throat. Well it has, swallowing is incredibly difficult add food and it's very painful. Has anyone any suggestions to help numb the pain.

problems with pain and swallowing can be common after head and neck radiation, there is a condition called Radiation Esophagitis, it is usually temporary lasting for up to a few weeks. Your GP or cancer team should be able to help with pain management, there are also a couple of management strategies that can help. If you keep your throat moist it can dull the sharp swallowing pain. Also try to work out which textures you are finding easier and stick to them. Some people find that thickening fluids helps. Make sure you keep your GP or cancer team informed of your current symptoms they could maybe help provide you with build up drinks.
I hope things start to improve soon, I am sure the health unlocked community will have ideas of what helps.
My heart goes out to you mine was damaged l was on patches for pain and had my gullet stretched twich ,I still struggle with red meat but found different things I eat, good luck xx
I will be starting radiation also and concerned with that , among other things. I know the Dr can percribe something to numb your throat, also heard of eating a TSP of honey before and after radiation to sooth your throat. I hoping I can handle it, 5 or 6 weeks everyday, and chemy ,1 ,x week for 5or 6 wks..I had a local reoccurance on lymph nodes...I am very.petite and definitely can't afford to lose weight.
