Seek a Patient Centered Radiation Oncologist in North East USA

Dearest warriors, I will appreciate your help.... Looking for radiation oncologists in the NJ, NY area or any place if there is none in NJ and /or NY. I am currently treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering NY. My case is a bit different, I am a new patient with Small Cell Lung Cancer with no distant metastasis and none to the Brian. As some of you may have seen my previous post , I was originally stage 4 non-small cell with metastasis to plural lining and the plural cavity of my left lung only---No metastasis to any other organ or brain. After 6 months on the treatment , my cancer transformed into small cell lung cancer. My Small Cell is called extensive stage because I was originally stage 4 Non-small cell. My oncologist doesn't want me to undergo any radiation because it can cause further complications to the plural lining and plural cavity. I am not sure if this is really true, need to have a second opinion with a radiation oncologist.

Proton radiotherapy is finally available in the NY area. At the Lungevity Hope/ Survivor Summit in DC this year radiologist Dr Drew Moghanaki who is head of Clinical Research at the VA told us that proton radiotherapy can be used when it’s not safe to have traditional radiation. You might want to look into that. It may take your insurance company a bit to approve it but it’s worth investigating.

Denzie is a wealth of information and I expect you will get additional recommendations. I have a friend who is a radiation oncologist where i live but not where i am treated (Kansas City, MO). As i am beginning to search for another second opinion 4 years after my first one, she insists that we need to find someone at an institution who has a large patient population of the kind of lung cancer i have with hopes that they have other patients “like you.” It sounds like that is your approach here, and this forum could be a good place to get info.

And can I just say...your “unique” situation brings many curse words to my mind on your behalf. I am so sorry you are going through this.

Best wishes

Jennifer
