I was really pleased with the results of my annual Senior Checkup this past week.
After a long lapse during Covid and lockdown, eating cakes and biscuits etc and obviously putting on weight, I went back to the LCHF lifestyle a few months ago and not only have I lost over a stone in weight (18 lbs) but my bloodtest showed my cholesterol has gone down in spite of having enjoyed lots of meats, fats, eggs and cheese. And I am also not pre-diabetic any more.
The only trouble is that I seem to have come to a stop at the moment, not putting the weight back on but not losing any more either. I still have another stone to lose but I’m a bit worried about several birthdays coming up and not forgetting Christmas when there are always a lot of tasty carbs on offer! I hope I will be able to resist the temptation!
I’m wondering how everybody else manages to resist all those tempting carbs?!

Very well done on the weight loss, and the test results!
It is easier for me to say no to all the carbs we get offered on special occasions, as I am coeliac and so need to be GF - but sometimes people very kindly provide loads of GF cakes and biscuits. The only way then if I crave them is to think about all the progress I have made and not wanting to go backwards. Also - having the first one is the problem, as I'm sure that eating a little sugar is what switches on the craving for more - and more!
Finally - try not to arrive at a party hungry - eat plenty of good stuff before you go, and that makes it easier to say no.
Yes you are so right, as soon as you have one sugary treat you want more so it is best to not have any at all. I’m fine at home because I simply don’t buy any but it’s the ‘chocolate season’ coming up. I will try what you said and fill up on the good staff before I get tempted.
Hello Freesia3, Well done on turning things around and your great results. What did the nurse say?
I have also come to a stop as regards losing weight, even though I though that I have unwanted middle mass. But I remain convinced that I do not want to gain weight. I have eaten low carb for about three years. One thing that has helped me is to have renamed so called goodies as baddies and so called treats as punishments, as they are bad for me and punish me in terms of weight gain and in the case of sweet things bad for my teeth.
I think that I have convinced myself, so I really do not want those carb high sugar high foods.
Having said that, if we are eating at a friends' home, we don't want to be ungrateful so we will eat whatever we'er given, perhaps smaller quantities.
Thanks and the same to you 😊 I have actually started losing weight again, another couple of pounds since I last wrote so I’m hoping the final stone will be gone soon and I will just have to maintain. Fingers crossed.
According to the NHS BMI calculator I am still overweight and have to aim for 10st 10lb. I am 11st 9lb at the moment. A few months ago I was 12st 13lb, the heaviest I have ever been and I was determined never to reach 13st! Personally I think I should aim for less as I was never more than 9st until some years ago. So I think at my age 10st would be good as I don’t want to start looking haggard 🤔 😄
Well done on losing the weight and the test results. I also found my rest results improved after following low carb.
I think there comes a time on low carb where you stop losing weight. Looking at the other replies and my own experience.
If you are eating out look at the menu if you can before. Most places put them online and decide what you will eat. You are less likely to be tempted by goodies when you get there.
Sometimes an extra treat does no harm and you can be extra careful afterwards if it is a special occasion.
Are friends and family aware of your weight loss? If they are supportive ask them not to offer the goodies. Well meaning pe-ople are good at offering goodies and "just one" can lead to a slippery slope.
Thank you. Fortunately I have started losing weight again so now it’s up to the last stone. I normally don’t have a problem with starters and mains when eating out, it’s when others are having all these scrumptious desserts. I don’t really have a sweet tooth any more unless I see them all around me. And with Christmas coming up there will be quite a few Christmas dinners with different clubs I belong to. I’ll just have to make sure I don’t let it bring me on the wrong path again after the holidays and make sure I don’t carry on with bad habits in the new year! Good luck to you too 😊
Congrats on your excellent health results/improvements.
I do have a weekend here and there where I eat carbs/whatever I want sociably- I just try not to do it every weekend. And I'm pretty strict in the week absolutely every week, unless I'm on holiday.
Most people I socialise with know I don't eat carb heavy food very often and are quite accommodating/enjoy the challenge of cooking something different. At work I used to tell people I don't eat sugar/carbs but then they keep trying to convince me to eat cakes/fruit anyway so I've stopped trying to explain to people and just have an automatic "no thanks" response to any food that anyone offers.
If I go out for dinner I ask that we choose a cuisine where the carbs are "detachable" from the rest of the food... i.e. steak (where you can have two veg and cheese with your meat but leave the chips) rather than something like pizza/pasta where the carbs are inescapable.
Thank you. I’m the same, low carb all week and relax a bit at the weekend. On Saturdays we usually have some unhealthy but delicious takeaway but if we don’t go out on Sunday I will have a roast with for me mainly meat and veg with maybe a couple of small roast potatoes, pretty easy really. To make up for Saturday.
When I go out for lunch with friends I usually stick with omelette and salad which I love anyway. And of course no chips!
I am actually back on track since my earlier post but am still dreading the festive season. Still, I will have to do the best I can but I do love Christmas desserts when I’m eating out in December 😋
Are you actually trying to lose weight or just maintaining?
I stopped weighing myself quite a while ago. I suspect I'm in the "healthy" weight range at the moment... although I have some extra fat on my tummy that I'm (very) slowly working on flattening out . I'm more about body shape than weight I think.
I have an endocrine/metabolic disorder so if I eat carbs too much I gain fat very quickly - LCHF is pretty much a way of life for me by necessity I guess. TBH It's the only way I've ever been able to manage my weight/body shape without resorting to deprivation.
I'm working on building muscle at the moment as I've read that's one of the best ways of protecting your health into middle age....
I know what you mean about Christmas desserts. I try to focus on pate and cheese rather than the sweet stuff I guess. But I'm very partial to a box of rose and violet creams at Christmas! And too much booze 😂
🤣 You’re right about paté and cheese etc, I enjoy that too.
My real downfall are the Lindor milk chocolate balls that my husband always buys me for every birthday, anniversary and Christmas! I have at least managed to convince him to buy just a small carton instead of the largest one he can find! And I make him have some too 😄
It’s a bit late for me to worry about middle age as I’m well past that stage. But I do exercise, some strengthening floor exercises at home but mainly walking every day. I used to diet to look good, by starving myself and endless calorie counting, it did work while I was young and I managed to stay a healthy weight. Now I am losing weight to get fit and healthy again and with LCHF it’s a pleasure rather than a chore, I like the fact that you don’t have to go hungry, I definitely don’t want to count calories again. Looking better because of it is a bonus!
Good luck with your muscle building, I would have to find mine first before I could start building them 😂
