Fish and no chips

One thing with low carb life-style is I do miss occasional fish and chips. I went passed a chippy tonight and the smell was wonderful.

So my question is, if I had just the battered fish, without any chips (which I won't miss anyhow), is that going to be full of carbs.

And let's assume the batter is medium, not great chunks of it, just a nice covering, how I like it.

I so hope you're going to say it's fine, but I want the real truth even though it may be hard to take.

Hi Cyrtis - I think the answer depends on what your dietary requirements are. For example, if you are needing to maintain a keto diet for specific health reasons, then one battered fish could easily put you over 20g carbs, but if you're just eating low carb for general health benefits then it's probably not going to have an adverse effect over the balance of a day/week.For us, if the rest of the family are having battered fish, then I'll usually have a half a piece of the fish, with the veggies or a nice salad.

when I was first doing lchf and really trying to lose weight I wouldn't have eaten it. Now I am closer to maintaining, and eating moderate carbs (60-100g per day) I would eat the battered fish, but only as an occasional treat once in a while. For years I ate fish and chips at my auntie's house every Friday night without fail :)

I still enjoy a battered fish now and then :)

Yeah that's me I'm on the keto side of maintenance, not quite keto but very low carb. I don't count, just keep an eye on my belt.

Thanks for replies, battered fish for me soon then, looking forward to it. I was just worried that the batter was incredibly full of carbs.

I ask for my fish to be floured rather than battered - I know it's still flour but the coating is much much thinner.

That's probably a healthier option all around; it will soak up less of the undesirable oil and as it's pan fried so the oil won't be reused.

I was never a fan of the batter, so I used to just eat the fish and leave the batter behind - it was basically flash steamed!

I'm with Mike on this one - it really doesn't matter if it's full of carbs.

The whole point of LCHF is that it gets your metabolism working properly again. You can eat the occasional load of fish and chips and your body will deal with it just fine (instead of adding it to the fatberg).

Obviously, if you were trying to stay 'keto' for a while it'd be a no-no, but since you're not ...

Personally, when I've bought fish&chips/pizza/burgers on a whim, I find that it's really not as nice as I remember it. I'll usually finish it just because I've paid for it, and then conclude "meh, well, that was OK, but I don't think I'll buy that again for a while". And I don't.

It's not good food, in my opinion. The batter will be made of highly refined white flour, and it will be cooked in a seed oil that isn't healthy to start with, and could be full of toxins depending on how often it's been used and how it's been used.

But I also agree with everyone else. It's a treat. Having it occasionally won't do you any harm. Our livers are designed to deal with toxins if we don't overload it.

I wouldn't have it every week, but once in a while should fine. I have a pizza a couple of times a year 😋

We are supposed to eat "all the food groups" (Frozen, micro-waved and deep-fried) so the occasional fish is "good". I used to buy fillets of fish and oven bake them in olive oil and kitchen foil - but now I eat fish, batter, seed oil and a spring roll most Fridays.Is kebab meat good food?

to keep to 150 gms of carbs most days which is mostly from fruit n veg. I do miss my brown toast...
