For Hidden (I hope it was you!) who was asking about the difference between being in ketosis and being fat-adapted.

That’s very kind Stoozie. It was me. Others here have said they know they are fat adapted when they can fast forever or can hike 25 miles on an empty stomach. I don’t think that’s ever going to be me, but I after 9 weeks of Ketosis, I certainly feel a lot less hungry & get full more quickly. Maybe that’s my version of fat adapted..

" further research is necessary."

It's sooo annoying when people keep writing this at the end of every other paragraph. Most reputable journals have banned it from their pages.

I do find it incredible, though, that after at least 30 years of "anecdotal evidence", virtually no mainstream researchers can be bothered to look into all this in detail, and that none of the large funding bodies will throw them a few thousand quid to do so.

Still, can't upset the pharma companies by finding out that their products for fat loss, "high cholesterol", etc are completely useless, can we?

in reply toTheAwfulToad

Well realistically, we can’t expect pharmaceutical companies to do research into something they would not benefit from is low carb diets. I certainly would like to see more trials of low carb for weight loss & arthritis - I know dr unwin has a lot of evidence of reversing type 2 diabetes. But I’d like to results of trials in terms of how long it takes to lose weight & what body fat percentage people get down to.

Sure, but pharma labs aren't the only places doing basic research. Universities, in theory at least, are encouraged to research whatever might take their fancy. You'd think somebody, somewhere, would have chosen low-carb diets and fat adaptation for a PhD thesis. Even the sort of basic info that you mentioned would be nice. But apparently nobody's interested. Or - I suspect - nobody's interested in risking their academic career by supervising a student who wants to do that.

Dr Unwin is clearly getting great results. But it's all dismissed as "anecdotal", because it's not written up in Nature and accompanied by lots of statistics that nobody understands.

Agree.

In my own trial, I ran out of time for breakfast today (children’s party explosion from last night to clear up & swimming lesson to get to) & while I don’t feel my best, but I am still functioning.

How did the party go? Perhaps the clue is in the word explosion!

in reply toLeeleepuss

Oh it was great. I catered it myself & made a big & complicated cake. It wasn’t at home but dealing with all the washing up m, recycling & leftovers etc brought home was a faff. Next year he’s having 5 friends & the venue does the food!

Whole class parties are hard work, well done! We did a joint one for sons 3 and 4, 63 kids. Even though it was catered and I only had to do the cake and be pleasant for 2.5hrs, I was still wiped out and needed a gin :)

in reply toStoozie

We had gin the minute the birthday boy was in bed.... but only one as we were so tired & went to bed!

64 kids how horrific. We had 20 which was quite enough - happily the other 25 kids invited could not make it!

Fabulous 😁 my twin girls always insisted they had separate parties as they have separate friends. I’ll leave you to imagine how much fun that was....they now have sleepovers and we have a house full of teenage girls for the weekend - twice 😬 For my son’s 18th I got one of his friends to arrange a surprise ‘gath’ at our house for some of his friends and the rest of us went out and left them to it. Armageddon is the best word I can come up with for my kitchen when we got back!! What was I thinking?!! 😂

in reply toLeeleepuss

That makes my scenario seem much better in comparison 🤣

😂😂so know the feeling! After my daughters 18th last year I had to mop the floor multiple times and use a knife to scrape popcorn and pepperoni off the floor as it was welded on!

Same here-both my daughters are November birthdays. The older one goes to uni this year but I’ve still got a few years of the younger one wrecking the house 😂

in reply tobabss

I am just holding onto the idea that the whole thing burned up a load of calories....

Yeah my son is November. My girls are August though so they'll all be chucked outside 😂

I love that you trust your son that much. If you weren't taking anyone to A&E with alcohol poisoning, that trust was well placed.

Leeleepuss in reply toSubtle_badger

Nope no A&E visits on that occasion! I've known them all since they were about 5 and I know all of their mums so they wouldn't dare misbehave 😂 and no vomit either thank goodness!! 🤢
