Autophagy, too much of a good thing?

Ok, so I get I will have lost some folk just with my title :D but hear me out.

Some of us are using LCHF/Keto as a way of promoting cell renewal via autophagy (the body getting rid of unwanted cellular material via eating it - yum!). There are other methods too (fasting, calorie restriction, low protein, and HIIT training to name but a few).

I just wondered if any of you sage folks have looked into how we measure when we have:

a) achieved autophagy

b) when to stop

If we were looking just at body fat loss, we have easy metrics (GP says your BMI is too low, pals notice your clavicles stick out a bit much....)

What, if anything, do we have to guage such an internal, invisible process?

Any thoughts or links welcomed :)

I'm no expert but based on what I've read, it seems there isn't a reliable way to measure autophagy in us humans. All of the trials that have been done appear to have been in mice.

I read that Dr. Jason Fung had a best guess that autophagy starts around 20 to 24 hours into a 'long' fast and maxes out at around 32 hours.

I always aim to be in ketosis when I start a fast and then monitor blood ketones throughout.

Dr. Rhonda Partrick also has a lot of information on the subject - check out her podcast Found My Fitness.
