Once a week OH has fish and chips. I sometimes have the fish and take the batter off, I am told that it is better than a fish fried without batter because the batter, in effect, seals around the fish and gives a, virtually, steamed effect, but fried without batter it soaks it up? I also know that the main question is if they use lard or veg oil!! BUT the question I have is about the dreaded batter!! Nothing there that I can't have except the flour (provided they don't use veg oil) so how bad is the batter on keto? I normally keep my carbs very low, and do intend to splurge out on a fish sometime soon. just wondering how bad it will be.

I too like chippy fish, but always take the batter off. That way you avoid the carbs, but the worst culprit is the oil - it's always seed oil and eating the batter would give you a massive overdose!

The yearning for the batter is already passing. so probably won't bother at all by the time Thursday comes. I don't know where you are from Mike but 'up 't North' we do have a few who fry in dripping (or, mucky fat, as it is known ha ha) I had to ask a while ago because my daughter is vegetarian, so wouldn't have chips from a fat cooking shop. Now I need to find the opposite ones. I do know The well known Magpie in Whitby used to use lard. a bit of a trek for chips though!! 😊

There is only one chippy I know round here that uses dripping, but only on one special night of the week. Still terrified of saturated fat!

I've heard that chip shops are starting to revert to lard again. Not so much because the advice has changed (it hasn't) but because they're sick of having their equipment coated in resinous goo. Lard is much, much easier to clean. And coincidentally, of course, it's healthier. Eating oxidized and polymerized vegetable oil is bad for you - whoever would have guessed?

Personally I just eat the batter, but then again I only have fish-and-chips about once a year...

I used to have fish and chips once a week. and my favourite part was the batter, so taking it all off and throwing it to the birds is not a happy thing for me to do. I normally have one of my fasting days on Thursday (chippy day) so I don't get too tempted. I do agree that it is not good to be TOO hard on yourself and have things now and then if you really want them. But I like to make myself think about it for a couple of days before I dive in! That way, it often fades away before I have it ..... like this time. ..😁👍
