Broke my keto eating, so cross.

As you can see from my previous posts I'm not overweight, but started keto plan on 17th February, I have high cortisol and noticed my body shape changing around my waist and just wanted to be healthier.

Anyway, I hid my weighing scale and just went by my clothes and body shape. I haven't lost loads of weight, but, my clothes are fitting better and my body shape is better.

For the past week, I've been in a foul mood, and I feel sorry for anyone that has crossed my path. I think this maybe to do with my thyroid levels, and, I have been craving chocolate, maybe it is due to the fact it was Easter, but when I first started keto I didn't really have those cravings.

Anyway to curb this, I decided to try some keto baking and did some raspberry sponge cakes. Well after trying 3 of them (yes 3) I decided they were awful, too eggy and decided to throw them away before I scuffed them all.

I then decided to have a bit of dark chocolate, that was a mistake and had 50g of the chocolate, then last night at 10.30pm I decided to have a bag of pork scratchings, not happy with that had two flapjack bars at 19g of carbs each. I know that it is important not to eat late at night and I don't normally, I have my dinner then that's it.

After polishing off the flapjacks, my tummy was rumbling all night and I felt gutted that I had this craving and gave in.

I wasn't hungry either. I would of taken my son's Easter eggs and chocolate bars as well but, stopped myself.

This is normal to feel this way?

Best Wishes

So how do you feel now?

My personal hunch is that continual ketosis - for months or years - isn't normal. I don't have any evidence to back this up, but I suspect there are very few natural environments which would not provide either seasonal carbs, or the occasional opportunity of a carb binge. Some animals, for example, often binge on fruit if they find it.

Relentless high-dose carbs are pretty definitely bad for you (especially in conjunction with very low fat), but there's a wide range of diets outside of that particular danger point that seem basically fine.

If you feel like you've got it out of your system, I wouldn't worry about it. I occasionally have a craving for a burger or a pizza (about twice a year). I stuff my face with whatever-it-is, and then go right back to low carb. I don't know why this happens, but I don't let it bother me because it doesn't seem to have any impact on my weight or wellbeing. I don't have any desire to repeat it the next day because, as with your experience, it makes me feel bloated and uncomfortable.

Thanks for your reply.

Perhaps I’m being too hard on myself.

I’m feeling ok today, and I haven’t craved anymore sweet stuff.

I did chuckle when you said “I stuff my face with what ever it is and then go back to low carb”.

Relax.

This is a journey, not a destination.

My grandparents would look on this forum with bafflement. They just ate real food. You know, spuds, carrots, meat etc. They did OK and so should you. There is a frantic element here that should not be here.

Permanent ketosis sucks from my perspective.

Your right MikePollard

It’s a journey not a destination.

I was being too hard on myself because I thought I had balls it up.

Do you think maybe the raspberry cakes were so evocative of your old way of eating that they started you down a psychological slippery slope?

I'd love to be a LCHF-er who can eat keto cakes, keto pancakes, keto choc bars etc.... But in reality I'm not. I'm a meat and 2 veg and a handful of nuts girl. Maybe when i have been in maintenance a long time, but not right now.

I think you have a valid point about that.

It all started going wrong after the cake business. 🙄.

Just a thought- some people have chocolate cravings because they are magnesium deficient. If you decide to try a supplement, look for magnesium citrate or magnesium malate. Guess it works for some. I still want chocolate!! But chocolate doesn't like me, unfortunately.

I think if you are low carb it’s best to cut out completely all cakes, bread and such like. I have never been a believer in finding an alternative because nothing tastes better than the real thing so you will eventually go back to it. Just eat the real thing and say to yourself right I have done that . You may even find it wasn’t as good as you actually thought. But don't beat yourself up about it.
