Relapse
Hi kare1969, my name is Georgia I developed ITP after the birth of my son by C/S with massive infection requiring triple antibiotics for 10 day’s and hemorrhage requiring 4 units or blood. My platelets dropped slowly over 10 years to 25K before I was diagnosed. Bacterial or viral infections many times triggers the immune to trun on its self.
What do mean by “relaps”, what treatment did you receive, what was your baseline platelet count, were you on ITP meds., were there any surgical complications or infection?
Sorry for all these questions, I’m just trying to determine if your platelet count dropped due to additional stress on your immune system. In my case, my platelets fluctuate depending on my physical and emotional health regardless of the fact that I receive weekly Naplate injections to maintain my baseline counts between 30-80K. Hopefully this decline is temporary. Be well
Hi What I meant by relapse is that I had gone 17 years without any symptoms of ITP. I was not in any ITP meds for 17 years My hand surgery went very well. I also am a Type 1 diabetic and I don’t usually heal well. So I think perhaps my immune system was fighting extra hard to not let my hand get infected. It healed quickly and I was back to work cutting hair by two weeks. I was shocked when I noticed the tell tale signs that my platelets were low. I went to our ER where they found the count to be 6,000.. if I had waited they probably would have gone down to zero like they were when I first got diagnosed in 2001. I still can’t believe this happened again. But last count was over 650,000 and have stayed high with no treatment. It scares me to think this could happen again if I need mother surgery. Thanks for responding
Hi Kara, you didn’t mention in your history wether or not you had your spleen removed as part of initial treatment. A platelet count of 65K is high and you would have been monitored to insurer your counts returned to normal I.e. 150K-450K or if they continued in increase; in which case you would have started plateletpheresis to remove excess platelets as high platelet counts could lead to strokes. What has your Hematologist said? Be well
Hi Kara, I meant to say 650K is high, 😐
