ITP is an illness of exclusion. meaning that they actually test for everything else and then after they have eliminated everything else diagnose ITP. The usual tests that they use are Bloods, physical examination and they often also do a bone marrow aspiration. I was told by one Haematologist that they should not diagnose ITP without doing the bone marrow aspiration, but this seems to be an area of dispute amongst the medical community(lots of things are with ITP, for a long time they refused to accept fatigue as a symptom).

Hope that helps

Hi, as Dizz says it is a process of elimination. Your platelet count is checked on a regular basis and other conditions are crossed off the list as time progresses. There is no easy way to diagnose ITP and there is no easy way to cure it. NickyD

The main way of diagnosing ITP is by looking at the blood smear.. a smear of blood on a laboratory slide which they look at under the microscope. It should show large platelets which are all new with no other odd blood cells.
