Hair loss Icu
things that promote healthy hair growth after telogen effluvium ( hair loss after trauma)
Iron
"Iron is an essential mineral that is necessary for the production of haemoglobin, which carries oxygen to the body's tissues, including the hair follicles. Without enough iron, the hair follicles can become weak and the hair can become brittle, dry, and prone to breakage."
Collagen
"There is evidence to suggest that collagen peptides, also known as CP, can help to promote hair growth.”
Biotin
“Biotin is a vitamin that is important for the growth and maintenance of hair and skin. Some studies suggest that using a biotin supplement can improve the thickness of hair and can help to reduce hair shedding."
Zinc
“Zinc is an essential mineral that is important for a variety of bodily functions including the immune system and wound healing. Zinc can also play a role in the synthesis of keratin, a protein that makes up hair, skin and nails."
Vitamin C
While there is limited scientific evidence to suggest that vitamin C supplements may help stop hair loss, it is important for overall health and can support healthy hair growth.
Omega-3
According to the hair expert, Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients that are important for many functions in the body, including maintaining healthy hair and skin.”
In addition to the above excellent advice, I also swapped to a "volume" shampoo, as my hair is somewhat thinner after falling out post-ICU and returning again.
A friend also bought me something called Nioxin Anti-Hair Loss Serum as a gift. I am not sure if it had any effect, other than maybe a placebo effect!
I have also seen advice on the CC-SN FB site that if you are taking an iron supplement that this should be complimented by orange juice. Don’t for get to seek medical advice!
Mine started at three months in handfuls...very distressing . I'm now in month 8 and braved the hairdressers as has slowed down. She says the texture has totally changed in some parts of my scalp ...was quite taken aback by the change ...but managed to make me look human . I have short hair anyway so had no problem going shorter! But glad not to be sweeping the mass of hair off the floor or bed every day ! Another thing people don't understand ...'oh but you have thick hair ' doesn't help! And as with so much of this year ...totally unexpected and no one told me it might happen ....
iron protein Ferritin is essential to support hair growth and ideally should be >50. Look at the Mayo Clinic for further information The dr can test your blood for this and other indications as Sepsur said. I also recommend Plantur 39 tonic and shampoo. My ferritin was 9 and my hair was falling leaving bald patches. It was during the months my brother was critically ill in an induced coma and I was visiting every day to advocate for him. We were born on the same day and very close so I could not eat and was functioning only to visit him. 5 years on he’s made a good recovery.
Yet something else you don’t get a heads up about after leaving ICU! I found it extremely distressing but was reassured on here that it was completely normal reaction by your body after being so ill-and all the drugs being pumped into you!
Did stop eventually, I didn’t get any actual bald spots so was lucky. My hair felt soft like baby hair after a few months. Think it took a year(more?) to get back to normal.
I was in ICU Jan-March 2019
Yes, mine all fell out. That was rotten. I had lovely long red hair. It was all over the floor in our flat. I went to a barber a month ago and got the rest all razored off so that I'm restarting. I also dyed it blue because I thought why not, I've always wanted to try blue hair! It has all grown in and is thick. I'll see if I can grow it long again.
The other way you can look at it is as a renewal, a new you. New hair, new skin, new way of doing things. Yourself 2.0 😊
I was in a coma and on a ventilator for 2 weeks on Christmas Day 2022! I lost a lot of my hair a few months ago and thought I was going bald too!!
However a few months later it has stopped and started growing back as normal! I am now using a hair oil called ‘hairy syrup growsmary’ which is helping it come back faster.
It will stop after a few months and grow back☺️
Yes I was alarmed at my hair loss when I came home after a 2 week coma. My nails also were bad with weakness and splitting. I’ve been using Nioxin shampoo and supplements and feel things are finally settling so you won’t go bald !! Horrible worry though
Lost my hair in ICU after 45 days of life support, after three months in hospital went home completely bald. My long curly hair all gone. Now seven months later have a really thick head of curly hair to the nape of my neck.
Hair Gummies from Super Drug and iron, helped so much.
Thought mine would never grow again but it has.
Don't worry if new hair is grey as it can be coloured in a few months time. 👌
Yes I lost hair and it was cut short so I looked like Tank Girl but not in a good way. It's grown back after quite a long time as my admission was August to December 2021 and it's now almost shoulder length but the other thing is it came in curly! It was straight or slightly wavy before and now it's curly and frizzy. Also more gray and lack lustre.
