Covid sepsis ICU

Hi all

My dad (68) previously independent and working was admitted to ICU three weeks ago since then he’s been put on dialysis, still doesn’t pass any urine, and has fought sepsis.

His o2 requirement has fluctuated but generally stays at around 60-80% his hearts required support however just recently there’s been tests showing significant liver damage.

His only but major caveat is that he is borderline immunocomprimised.

Drs push for end of life planning because of multiple organ failure but I just think they’re taking a hit and will recover!! They’re not failing just bruised!!

I don’t want to give up until his heart does. Is that selfish?

I forgot to add this is all because of him catching covid initially

Good Morning! Sounds pretty much what happened to my wife. Her CO2 levels were in the 140 range and never went below 100. She woke up only slightly. I held her DNR at home until the end. I could not see her suffer any longer. At some point we need to think quality of life if they survive. Also, only God knows the day we leave this earth. Dewey

I’m sorry to hear about your wife and everything you had to go through it’s so heartbreaking and traumatic .

I agree it has to be a well rounded and informed decision and one that persists in trying until the end but not in a way that drives more anguish and pain for everyone and the patient

No it is not selfish. You don’t say how old your Dad is or his previous state of health.I would ask to speak to Drs and explain your worries. My brother was critically I’ll with organ failure 4 years ago this time of year and made a good recovery he was in ECMO and dialysis and in a ventilator. Wishing you and your family all the best for your Dads recovery.

Hi Amz_49, my heart goes out to you, and I sincerely wish your dad strength to pull through this. My brother was in an induced coma last year due to septic shock after colon cancer surgery. I can only say to not give up hope yet. My brother was on dialysis for 7+weeks, and a little bit longer in coma, but once his kidneys started working again they slowly got him out of coma. He had to relearn everything, and was Ina rehab centre for 3 months. He's still not 100% but he's alive and with his family. I think you can ask the hospital for a little bit more time, to see if the organs will heal. At the same time it is also realistic to plan for both eventual outcomes, as long they have pursued all the treatment options, the only thing left is prayer, hope and patience. Good luck and all the best, and wishing your father a speedy recovery. And no, it's not selfish, but one has to consider the quality of life too.
