Spoke to the consultant today, my dad’s making good progress so far and they’re pleased about his lungs. They had him sitting up in a chair and breathing on his own, although he tired. He still has secretions, so they’re thinking they’ll look to extubate by midweek.I asked about his stroke and whether it’s possible that it’s neurological damage or related to inflammation from COVID. That’s prompted the doctor to say he’s going to discuss the subject further with the neurologists.
We’ve broached the subject of a tracheostomy again and the doctor’s still reluctant, but said another option they may explore is a mini tracheostomy to manage secretions.
I asked what their confidence level of a successful extubation would be and they think 50/50.
I feel we’re so close, but so worried about the plan for making this a one time chance.
They’re worried that he’ll keep having recurring infections.
We’ll be talking to the doctors again in the coming days.
