My husband has had his sedation reduced but was showing no response.Today they have resedated him as his breathing was out of sync with the ventilator and he seems more comfortable with it. They are doing ct of his brain and lungs layer today and I'm waiting the result .Has anyone else been through this as I think they were expecting some response by now ?So anxious and worried again.

Hi yes I’m in exactly the same position as you are right now. My husband has sedated since last Monday tried everyday but nothing he gets agitated and have to sedate him again. Be assured they do more ct scans and all the tests just in case something is holding him back that’s what they did my husband and although his not 100% there was nothing they was extremely worried about. They told me it’s up to the patients body to come round. Even this morning the nurse told me the doctors are going to try and take him off oxygen and sedation I asked when can I phone back to see if his ok she was rude and told me not to ring and see if someone phones me. That’s not going to happen I’m leaving it until 4 and am going to phone them. All the nurses and doctors have said this is perfectly normal and if they wasn’t confident enough they wouldn’t try and bring them round but again it’s up to the patients body. I know it’s frustrating because I want it the same as you so that I can speak to him and get some comfort that things are looking better. Hope this helps you here if you need me xx

I’ve already said that’s it want this year to be over and roll on 2022 I’m only 3 weeks in it aswell. Please don’t give up do you talk to him? I ask the nurses to put the phone to his ear and I talk to him and it does help xx

Try not to be overly pessimistic or unduly optimistic- every stage of recovery is so up and down. We all recover at different rates.

HiMy husband was the same was in ITU in September not Covid related.

They kept trying to reduce his sedation with either no response or extreme agitation.

It was a really long process and he had scans of the brain to make sure his brain function was ok. It was thankfully.

I remember the consultant telling me that each individual patient is different and will do it in there own time.

I found it extremely anxious waiting for him to “come round”.

Thankfully he did and all is good.

My husband spent 5 weeks in hospital 3 on ITU and is now back at work and almost back to normal!

Stay strong and positive xx

How did you cope? No one has said that his deteriorating or anything bad but all I keep thinking is what if I lose him. I just wish he would come out this sedation but his just so agitated all the time they try everyday xx

It’s an awful situation. I just took one day at a time. If it’s was not a good day I would not phone the hospital later in the evening to ensure I got some sleep. They also tried at the hospital lots of different combinations of drugs to reduce the agitation, and he got there eventually. My husband did have quite bad ITU delirium when he eventually came round.

I had really good support from my daughters, friends and mum.

He will get there, try to stay positive although I knows hard, I had days of despair.

But like I said all is good now.

Sending you lots of positive thoughts xx

HI Jess

It's an incredibly stressful time and you always fear the worst, its anxiety like I have never felt before. My husband took weeks to be lifted from his sedation holds , for the exact reasons you are mentioning. He was becoming very distressed and agitated . I kept thinking he will never get off the ventilator or ITU. Eventually it did happen, and when it did, it took a long time for him to come round. When he did come round , he was still seriously poorly and suffered from delirium for several weeks .

Sending you lot's of positive thoughts, take one day at a time and try to focus on yourself, x

No one has really told me what happens I’m thinking he gets weaned off the sedation and the ventilator and then that’s it nearly back to normal. There is no one at the hospital I can talk to I don’t even know how he gets weaned off the sedation. It seems to be like I wake up phone hospital at about 12/1 ask if his been weaned they say no got agitated try tomorrow this is all I’m getting basically xx

Which hospital is he in Jess, it is in the UK ? If so you can contact pals and ask them for some information. Mu husband was in the 1st wave and for the 1st week, it was impossible to try to get any update, they then appointed a liaison team made up of medical students and retired consultants . They gave me an updated report daily . I used to get a list of questions ready for when I got my daily call .
