Blood Clot from Covid and not waking up

My dad, who is 68, and was in good health prior to Covid, has been in ICU since August 22nd. He has been on a ventilator since Sept 6th and had a tracheostomy on Sept 17th. He hasn't woken up since his trach apart from opening his eyes and doesn't respond to commands. His Vent was turned down to 40% to maintain his blood oxygen and he seemed to be making progress but then he took a turn for the worse Sept 23rd and was diagnosed with a blood clot in his lung and his vent is now at 80%. His EEG showed some slowing, but they had put him back on sedation because of the pulmonary embolism. I am very worried. Has anyone else experienced something similar?

Oh my. We are in the exact same situation at the same time! My relative has been going through all the symptoms you’re describing (and was previously healthy). However he has been on vent and trach for 5 weeks now and still keeps going! So have faith it’s a long journey.

Thank you for your reply. It's hard, but I am trying to remain hopeful. They started my dad on Heparin for the clot. I am hoping this dissolves it and that his breathing will improve soon. I will be thinking of you and your relative. May he turn the corner and make a speedy recovery soon!

Hi. I was ventilated for 6 weeks in March. I had two PE’s in my lung. I was on Heparin injections whilst in hospital and Warfarin on Discharge. I had a scan in Aug that showed the clots had shrunk considerably. I remain very breathless, have good days and bad days. Don’t give up hope and stay positive. They almost gave up on me and turned me off but 6 months on, here I am. Good Luck x

Each person is different but I was sedated / ventilated for 6-8 weeks. I came round when I was ready. I also had a trachy. When I did come round I had to learn to swallow, speak, eat and walk. The weight and muscle loss was tremendous. I came out mid March and physically I am much stronger and mentally I am improving. It takes time! I found chair exercises and chair Togo a great help especially with breathing. The yogi also strengthened my voice box.
