After treatment in intensive care, 1 in every 5 people will go on to experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Clinical Psychologists specialising in trauma at Psychology Tools have put together a free patient guide on Critical illness, Intensive care and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, to offer information and guidance on how people might feel and to help explain why intensive care can contribute to developing PTSD.

The PTSD guide is available at:-

psychologytools.com/article...

The guide gives information about:

* How you might feel after spending time in intensive care

* Psychoeducation about PTSD

* Things about intensive care that can contribute to the development of PTSD

* Information about delirium

* Psychological approaches to treating PTSD

* Signposting to evidence-based treatment

* Information for mental health professionals working with patients who have PTSD following admission to intensive care

If you want the pdf version email me at Christina.jones@icusteps.org.

I have now read this. I have a question which is round when is the right time to read this? So bearing in mind that I have been out of hospital for over 5 ½ months and I have now started my CBT is there a risk that subconsciously I will filter out or over emphasise what I went through / still going through rather than just off load to my therapist OR am I over thinking!!!!!

I don’t think there is a right or wrong time to read it. I think if the information fits how you are feeling then it was the right time to read it

Haha ha! I know where you are coming from bless you. Relax. Yeah it's pretty much part of the whole thing to try to examine and pull it all apart cos it's something unknown and that causes a bit of fear and worry. Go with the flow with all info, advise, your feelings, it will sometimes make a bit of sense! And don't worry if it doesn't. Take a paddle with you and a cuppa tea.
