Recovery after sepsis.

I suffered from undiagnosed sepsis January 2019. I had been seen by two doctors, thinking I just had flue. A day later and I was feeling like I was dying and asked my husband to take me to hospital.

We didn’t know then I had sepsis shock and was starting to have multiple organ failure. The paramedics that took me to hospital, didn’t think I would make it.

The doctors could work out what was wrong , so put me into an induced coma for just under two wks. They found I had H1/N1.

When I was in icu I had the most horrendous , vivid nightmares, which lasted for days. Then I went into psychosis. My family had no idea what was happening to me. I was like this for a wk . The vivid nightmares haunt me still.

Now I am trying to deal with being left disabled as I have severe nerve damage and drop foot in my left foot.

I cannot live the life I did before . I’m exhausted all the time. And cry all the time. I thought when I came home from hospital, I would learn to walk again, and be better after a few wks. How wrong I was !

I'm so sorry you are still suffering, have you been able to get some counselling to support you at all? Did you have any physio to support you with your walking ?

You have been through an absolute ordeal and it affects everybody in different ways , your nightmares sound really distressing . I don't know the answer but would like to think you have access to a group via your doctor for the support you need. I wish I could help you more.

My husband has drop foot and nerve damage and is recovering from Covid and learning to walk again , he is getting great support from the physio team, he is also on nerve ending meds to reduce the horrendous pain he is in . Sending you a virtual hug .

Have to tried any physiotherapy?

The physios has to teach me to sit up, stand up, walk, eat, drink etc etc. When I started to walk ( and feeling very pleased with myself) I was shocked when Sophie my physio turned around and said “ Now I am going to get you to walk properly “ - I was placing my foot down but not in a normal stride pattern.

We do some videos that help rebuild strength - why not give them a go ( try and persuade your husband to join you - it’s so difficult motivating on your own)

Alternatively we are already running a weekly zoom exercise group for people in your position.
