Hi I am very worried because my mam went into hospital a week ago today with weakness and diarea and shortness of breath. They told us on the third day of being there that she has sepsis and pneumonia she is sedated and on a breathing machine her salts where very low and she is an alcoholic and a heavy smoker they are telling us that her organs are in a very bad way and she has a 50/50 chance of surviving this. I'm really worried because they are reducing her sedation but she isn't breathing on her own and won't open her eyes when it's been reduced her blood pressure seems to rise or it seems to go really low I'm really worried please can anyone give me and my family any advice has anyone came back from this. Please reply thanks you so much
Sepsis : Hi I am very worried because my mam went... - ICUsteps
Sepsis
Our situations aren't the same. But 11 years ago my father in law had an anurism rupture in his brain. It was almost 3 days before anyone found him. They said that with him still being alive was an absolute miracle. He stayed in an induced coma for over 5 months
And I can't tell you how many times the doctors called us in to say our last good byes and make arrangement's for the funeral. I believe he stayed in the hospital for about a year all together.* But what I'm getting at is nobody has an expiration date stamped on their foot. 50 /50 is great odds these days with all the modern medicine and technology. Just have faith and a little patience. # and ignore the odds given to you. Take care and keep us posted.
5months? So happy to hear about your Dad.
My mum is not in same position but they say she may have damage in brain, she only been in the icu almost two months now and its as if doctors are giving up on her. They say she won’t wake up from her induced coma. It’s been about 3 weeks since she came of sedation and all they doing is waiting but they keep calling meetings about taking ventilator off and if so, she may die.
She takes breaths on her own, the ventilator Just supports her, she yawns, opens her eyes at times and moves head but she won’t regain full consciousness.
She doesn’t move her hands or legs at all and isn’t aware of tube in her mouth which they keep saying is very uncomfortable. Which I completely understand but it’s not like she is dead yet.
Why is she being rushed like this? I feel she needs more time. They have given us another week before we have yet another meeting.
She only been in the ICU coming up 2 months now.
I had sepsis, double pneumonia, flu & leukaemia & multiple organ failure. I also had Severe ARDS- it takes a long time to recover - but I was determined.
The sepsis trust do some useful leaflets
Thank you for all the comments I'm just worried because she can't breath on her own and her organs are failing on her but thanks you so much for all your thoughts and comments
My dad took ages to wake up after Sepsis And was on the ventilator for almost 6 weeks. Try to just allow her to wake up in her own time. It’s different for everyone. When she does wake she might say and do all sorts of funny things. It’s uosetting but it won’t last. Hang in there
My 76 yr old grandmother was admitted into the hospital January 28th with pnuemonia, which cause her to have a heart attack and 2 days later they diagnosed her with sepsis. She was on the ventilator and drs told us she had a 50/50 chance. They were about to start dialysis because her kidneys were failing and her heart was working less than 20%. She was on an induced coma... They tried taking the vent out and waking her up every day but it didn't work. It would make her blood pressure go really high and after about a week when they would lower her sedation meds she would try to pull out her tubes... But finally after 2 weeks she woke up good and they we're able to take the tube out 😊 but the next day she started having severe delirium, they say it's normal especially coming off sedation and meds and having sepsis... They gave her some meds to help with delirium and it helped amazingly!.. but she couldn't eat. They tube messed up her throat and when she tried to eat her food went to her lungs instead of her stomach. They were going to do a feeding tube in her stomach but I read that delirium can cause that also so I asked them to wait a few days and redo the swallow test and she passed!... She got to come home on February 14th! Her kidneys are good and her heart went up to 50%! She's not completely better but she's still improving everyday! So just know that she can overcome this! I spent almost every night on my knees praying for God to bring my grandmother out of this and he did! He can for you too!
My husband did come back from this he was 10 days in ICU and he was extremely ill with sepsis, multi organ failure, E coli pneumonia, bleeding from the bowel,UTI and his kidneys were shutting down. There is always hope, I hope every thing turns out well for you. Catherine.
Oh yes I’ve seen several people come out of this predicament. I’ve also seen them give up smoking and drinking for about 6-9 months just long enough to get strong and healthy so they can turn around and go back to their old ways and have it happen again. I’m not the kind of person to sugar coat things and I’m sorry if that’s what you’re looking for but ultimately it’s up to your mom . You can’t force her to take care of herself all you can do is let it be known how much you love her and what behaviors you will or won’t tolerate. Later after she comes out of it. It depends if her body is trying to do any portion of the breathing as they try to lower machines. It’s a very exhausting time for you, remember YOU need to eat & sleep too. Good luck stay strong
