Home Recovery after 4 weeks in ICU

Hi! Hope you are all well?

My dad (72) was scheduled for a triple bypass in March. The surgery was a success however several hours later his aorta burst. He was in an induced coma, on life support for 5 days. The family is thankful for the miracle we received in that, firstly he survived and secondly with no permanent organ damage to any of his main organs in his body. He spent a total of 4 weeks in ICU. 3 weeks of which he was unable to eat, or walk and took in very little fluids.

My question? Has anyone had a family member with a similar experience and how were you able to cope when your loved one returned home?

My dad is experiencing a lot of confusion, he is very jumbled and refuses to do simple things like eat or drink water. The Dr’s have advised that we get him up and sitting in a chair but he has very little desire to do so. Our concern? How much do we push him as he is now able to be up (when assisted) and mobile.

Any advice or tips you can offer us would be greatly appreciated. :)
